Duties Description

Perform engineering duties related to a group of electrical systems projects.

Advise on electrical systems design or management of ongoing rehabilitation of existing electrical equipment.

Assist a higher-level professional engineer overseeing subcontractors or development of electrical specifications writing and estimates of work.

Evaluation of operational problems in existing electrical systems.

May supervise consultant work.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Operational Needs

Travel may be required (approximately 20%).

Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle is required, or otherwise demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.

Notes

There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired via NY HELPS will be appointed on a permanent non‑competitive basis and will begin a probationary period.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non‑competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam.

Employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

The Office of the General Services (OGS) supports telecommuting where it is reasonable to do so based on the agency’s mission and operational needs. Generally, employees new to OGS Design and Construction (D&C) will be restricted from telecommuting for at least 8 calendar weeks. After the initial 8‑calendar‑week restriction, if an employee’s duties and work performance are aligned with telecommuting they may be allowed to do so. Upon approval to telecommute, OGS D&C employees may telecommute up to 4 days per pay period.

Minimum Qualifications

Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND a qualifying bachelor’s degree or higher as listed below; OR proof of passing the NCEES FE AND one year of full‑time qualifying engineering experience as listed below.

Qualifying degrees: Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.

Qualifying experience: One year of full‑time engineering experience in electrical systems.

This title includes a traineeship opportunity, and applicants must meet one of the following:

Show a bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology (listed above).

Proof of passing the FE AND one year of full‑time engineering experience (listed above).

Current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to a Grade 18 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

NOTE: RESUMES MUST INCLUDE MONTH AND YEAR FOR START AND END DATES. IF ANY EXPERIENCE IS LESS THAN FULL TIME, INDICATE THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF HOURS WORKED PER WEEK.
