ConsultNet Technology Services and Solutions, Salt Lake City, UT, United States

Linux Server Administrator
Salt Lake City, UT – Hybrid | 6 month contract | $55-$65 an hour

Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Linux Server Administrator on behalf of a regional digital federal credit union headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT. This 6‑month contract role sits at the core of a heavily virtualized infrastructure environment — approximately 250 active virtual machines running across 29 ESXi hosts spanning two data centers and 13 branch locations, with around 200 replicas under Veeam protection. The ideal candidate brings deep Linux system administration experience in a VMware vSphere environment, a working understanding of AWS compute and storage, and the discipline required to operate in a regulated financial institution where uptime, change control, and auditability are non‑negotiable. You will work alongside compute and storage specialists and coordinate closely with network and security teams, but you own the Linux layer — its configuration, performance, patching, and reliability.

Required Skills

5+ years of hands‑on Linux administration in a production environment — RHEL, CentOS, Rocky Linux, or Ubuntu Server preferred

Proficiency managing Linux services, daemons, systemd, cron scheduling, log management, and system performance tuning

Strong command‑line competency — shell scripting in Bash (and ideally Python) for automation of routine administration tasks, patch deployment, and system health checks

Experience managing user accounts, sudo policies, SSH key management, and file system permissions in a multi‑user enterprise environment

Solid understanding of Linux networking fundamentals — IP configuration, routing, DNS resolution, and firewall rules (iptables / firewalld)

VMware vSphere virtualization

Hands‑on experience administering VMware vSphere / ESXi environments — VM provisioning, resource allocation, snapshot management, and template maintenance

Ability to manage Linux VMs at scale across multiple ESXi hosts — including guest OS patching, disk expansion, and performance troubleshooting

Comfort working within a dual vSphere deployment spanning data center and remote branch ESXi hosts (13 branch‑resident hosts in this environment)

Familiarity with vSphere HA, DRS, and vMotion concepts — ability to coordinate with infrastructure team on workload placement and failover planning

Cloud infrastructure — AWS

Working knowledge of AWS compute and storage services — EC2 instance management, EBS volumes, S3, and IAM fundamentals

Ability to manage Linux instances in AWS, including patching, monitoring, and connectivity back to on‑premises infrastructure via AWS VPC

Familiarity with AWS Private Link connectivity — understanding how services like Snowflake connect securely into the VPC without traversing the public internet

Security, compliance & change control

Experience maintaining Linux systems in a regulated environment — patch cadence, vulnerability remediation, and audit‑ready documentation practices

Familiarity with CIS Benchmarks or STIG hardening guidelines for Linux servers

Disciplined change control habits — comfort operating within formal change management processes where unplanned modifications carry compliance and operational risk

Understanding of how Linux system security intersects with the broader network security environment — coordination with Palo Alto firewall rules, network segmentation zones, and access control policies

Financial services environment

Prior experience supporting server infrastructure in a regulated financial institution — credit union, bank, or equivalent — with awareness of uptime expectations and audit obligations

Ability to work collaboratively with network, security, and application teams in a small‑to‑mid‑size IT department where cross‑functional communication is essential

Bonus / Soft Skills

Experience supporting Linux‑hosted application infrastructure in a Client or similar core banking environment — understanding of how the core banking application layer depends on the OS and VM layer beneath it

Familiarity with Cisco Collaboration infrastructure dependencies — experience supporting Linux‑based UC application servers (e.g., Cisco CUCM, Unity, or similar) running as VMs in a vSphere environment

Configuration management tooling experience — Ansible, Puppet, or Chef for managing Linux configuration at scale across a distributed VM fleet

Snowflake or data pipeline awareness — understanding of how Linux servers interact with cloud data flows, particularly in AWS‑connected environments

Experience with Nimble Storage or similar SAN‑attached block storage arrays in a VMware datastore context

RHCE, VMware VCP‑DCV, or AWS SysOps Administrator certification
