
Network Engineer (Intermediate)

Akima Systems Engineering is seeking a Network Engineer (Intermediate) to support operations at Shaw Air Force Base, SC. The Network Engineer provides Tier 2 network engineering support, responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of enterprise network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and associated network services across NIPRNET and SIPRNET environments. This role includes diagnosing and resolving network incidents, performing configuration management, implementing approved changes, and ensuring compliance with DoD cybersecurity policies, including RMF and DISA STIG requirements. The Network Engineer supports network monitoring tools, analyzes performance metrics, and proactively identifies and mitigates potential issues to maintain mission continuity and high availability. The position requires coordination with Service Desk, Systems Administration, and Cybersecurity teams to ensure timely escalation and resolution of network-related tickets, as well as participation in outage response, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to operate in a high-tempo environment are essential.
Responsibilities
provide O&M, monitoring, and administrative support to the classified (SIPRNET) and unclassified (NIPRNET) networks, including up to three additional networks (e.g., CENTCOM Partner Network-X, BICES) installed at Shaw Air Force Base. This includes patching at floor ports and communication rooms, activation of ports on switches, applying VLANs to ports, and patching network devices.
provide secure communications technical support to conduct Command and Control (C2), including Tier 2 support and maintenance for CONUS, fly-away IT equipment, AnyConnect phones, and services to off-post quarters.
provide technical support for dedicated point-to-point data circuits, comply with network security policies and configurations (including DISA STIGs, bulletins, advisories, RCC-SWA directives, and IA policies), and maintain the Durosuite inspection tool to assist IA with STIG compliance monitoring.
install Government-purchased software and hardware and maintain LAN cables (copper and fiber) in server rooms and communication closets, including installing prefabricated cables to workstations.
maintain port security on all user-facing ports within designated facilities, using Cisco Identity Service Engine (ISE) as a radius server and logging on a designated server; utilize the Army Registry of Networks and Layer-3 Devices (ARNLD).
configure, fill, maintain, and upgrade encryption devices for secured communications; COMSEC material to be provided by Government.
provide Network Operating System installation and configuration, health monitoring, backups/restoration, and non-compliance reporting per DoD and NIST guidelines (DODI 8500.2 and SP 800-53).
maintain the network including adding new devices, implementing and changing configurations as directed (IOS, NX-OS, IOS-XE), and performing health monitoring, backups, restoration, and alerting.
manage Collaboration Tools to support instant messaging, room-based chat, voice (e.g., Jabber), and document sharing on the designated USARCENT network.
support up to three additional networks (e.g., CPN-X, BICES) and assist with touch labor for multiple other networks and devices at Shaw Air Force Base.
provide VoIP and VoSIP technical support for USARCENT change management, engineering, design, and configuration; comply with NETCOM or related authoritative documents.
support IP telephony architecture with the USARCENT G6, coordinating with designated representatives to develop and execute multi-year VoIP/VoSIP strategies; document the infrastructure to ensure compliance with USARCENT policies.
provide technical support, installation, and upgrades for the unified communications management suite.
monitor the network infrastructure including PSTN SIP Trunks to enable telephone and teleconferencing for VoIP/VoSIP.
install, operate, and maintain the voicemail system with automated interactive response for incoming calls.
provide 24-hour on-call and on-duty technical support during outages and mission activities.
maintain rack inventory diagrams of all equipment under control in the NOC, including rack unit, identifiers, make, and model; deliverables to leadership within 60 days of network modifications.
maintain license-compliant state of CUCM and ISE via CSSM servers on SIPRNET and NIPRNET as required.
establish and conduct a network and server monitoring program with approved tools to align with RCC-SWA NETOPS, providing situational awareness across NIPRNET, SIPRNET, and up to three additional networks; identify problems, inefficiencies, and bottlenecks.
Qualifications
Minimum 2-4 years of IT Network Administration / IT Network Engineering experience
DoD NIPR/SIPR experience
Required CompTIA Network+ certification (CCNA preferred)
