About the Position
This first‑line supervisory position involves technical and mechanical work, managing the County’s garage maintenance operations—including the maintenance, service, and repair of light to heavy motorized equipment, vehicles, and fire and rescue apparatus. The role performs independent judgment and initiative, reports to a higher‑level manager, and is evaluated on production, timelines, and adherence to policies.

Responsibilities

Supervise daily operations of the central vehicle maintenance and repair facility, including body shop operations.

Oversee preparation of repair work orders and dispatch tow trucks for road service calls.

Monitor warranties on equipment and components, following up with manufacturers as needed.

Analyze costs associated with acquisition and maintenance of equipment, preparing life‑cycle costing studies and replacement analysis.

Assist the Fleet Management Service Office with customer service functions.

Supervise garage employees and ensure work assignments are completed on time and in compliance with SOPs.

Write and conduct performance evaluations, provide guidance and counseling, and assist in disciplinary actions, complaints, and grievances.

Coordinate and assist in scheduling in‑house and outside training for technicians and support staff.

Monitor effectiveness and quality control of garage maintenance programs.

Evaluate, update, and upgrade the preventive maintenance program.

Assist in procurement of parts and services with outside vendors and the parts department.

Conduct spot checks and scheduled safety inspections to ensure compliance with OSHA and Maryland Occupational Safety and Health standards.

Perform additional duties as required within the general occupational category and responsibility level for the class.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED.

Three (3) years of Master/Assistant Garage Supervisor level experience servicing, repairing, and providing preventive maintenance on light, medium, and heavy motorized equipment, vehicles, or fire and rescue equipment.

Two (2) years of experience supervising full‑performance level mechanics.

Valid driver’s license.

Valid Department of Transportation medical certification card.

Preferred Qualifications:

Automotive Service Excellence Master certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint).

Conditions of Employment

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and DOT medical card.

Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate required proficiency.

Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment as required.

Successfully pass pre‑employment checks (reference checks, background investigation, drug screening).

Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee, reporting during standard or non‑standard hours, including emergencies.
