Merchandising Assistant Store Manager in Training

Merchandising Assistant Store Manager in Training (MASM-IT) will gain hands‑on experience in the key responsibilities and functions of a Specialty Assistant Store Manager at The Home Depot. The MASM‑IT will undergo a comprehensive training program that includes hands‑on experience, mentorship, and leadership development. Throughout the training, MASMs will become familiar with Manager on Duty duties and learn to oversee the various merchandising departments (Garden, Hardware, Lumber, Building Materials, Plumbing, Electrical) to ensure the successful execution of key programs that enhance customer service, product availability, and store presentation. MASMs will collaborate with the Store Manager, Assistant Store Managers (ASMs), and Merchandising field teams, develop and implement strategies that boost sales and profitability, create actionable game plans for departmental success, and ensure smooth department operations. MASMs are expected to lead by example, uphold and support all lawful company policies, and during the training period—up to six weeks—learn to execute the key responsibilities of an Assistant Manager.

Key Responsibilities

15% - Customer Experience: Supervising associates in the selling effort and lead GET culture; driving customer service and associate engagement, ensuring customer concerns are solved effectively and taking necessary actions promptly.

10% - Operations Management: Performing Opening, Closing MOD and other whole‑store focus responsibilities; adhering to all company policies and procedures and holding associates accountable for following them. Authority over store SOPs, especially safety compliance, and learning tactics to maintain process accuracy and mitigate shrink.

10% - Safety: Ensuring self and associates follow all safety and hazmat procedures and Safety Matters guidelines at all times.

15% - Sales and Productivity: Working with key partners to plan merchandise placement, signing, and support stock integrity through inventory management. Learning to maintain and operate all store equipment and systems, and managing daily financial operations.

50% - Training and Preparing for Assistant Manager Position: Participating in a structured training program covering operations, customer service, sales & profitability, and company policies. Demonstrating tactics to support staffing and scheduling, identifying and resolving stock deficiencies, training associates on selling behaviors, resolving customer issues, and supporting both installed sales/special orders and product sales. Demonstrating performance‑management processes, including associate performance reviews and disciplinary execution, and completing all assigned training modules and assessments.

Travel Requirements

Typically requires overnight travel less than 5% of the time.

Physical Requirements

Must continuously stand or walk, and regularly lift, handle, or carry material or equipment of moderate weight (8‑20 pounds).

Working Conditions

Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with cross‑functional teams.

High‑school diploma or GED.

Bachelor’s degree program or equivalent in a field related to the job.
