Job Description
Position Summary: The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is a 12‑month post‑graduate program designed to build on a Doctor of Pharmacy education. The program is structured around the ASHP Accreditation Standard for PGY1 Residencies and focuses on developing clinical pharmacists who can independently manage medication‑related care for patients with a wide range of conditions and prepare for board certification and postgraduate year two residency training.

The program includes four core competency areas: Patient Care, Advancing Practice & Improving Patient Care, Leadership & Management, and Teaching, Education & Dissemination of Knowledge. After an initial orientation, the resident will participate in required and elective 5‑week learning experiences, staff the central pharmacy, provide weekend clinical coverage, and develop skills in drug information and teaching.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Patient Care – establish collaborative relationships with health‑care providers; design, recommend, monitor, and evaluate patient‑specific therapeutic regimens; document all direct patient‑care activities.

Hospital Practice – dispense medications according to institutional policies; utilize pharmacy technical support; assist with inventory control.

Program Completion – successfully complete all elements of the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center PGY1 Residency Program.

Practice Management – participate in adverse drug event reviews, policy development, departmental planning, quality improvement, and personnel management activities.

Teaching – conduct case conferences, journal clubs, in‑service education for health‑care providers and pharmacy staff; co‑precept pharmacy students; participate in the Boston‑area hospital Residency Teaching Seminar Program to earn a teaching certificate.

Research – lead one primary research project suitable for presentation at the Eastern States Residency Conference, prepare a project write‑up, and pursue publication when appropriate.

Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee – conduct medication‑use evaluations, prepare and present monographs for formulary additions or medication‑class reviews.

Drug Information – provide concise and timely responses to drug‑information requests; review current literature to stay current on new drugs, indications, and safety alerts.

Writing Skills – prepare drug‑information responses, chart notes, nursing newsletters, and meeting minutes.

Investigational Drug Services – manage investigational drugs according to established protocols and institutional policies.

Meeting & Conference Attendance – participate in the LHMC Influenza Program, Basic Life Support and ACLS certification, Department National Pharmacy Week, and other required events.

General Compliance – incorporate LHMC guiding principles, mission statement, and goals into daily activities; comply with all LHMC policies and behavioral expectations; maintain courteous interactions with colleagues and patients; meet customer service standards; participate in quality‑improvement activities; complete mandatory education; perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

PharmD degree.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:

PharmD degree; letter of intent; college transcript; CV; three letters of recommendation; personal on‑site interview.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

Basic knowledge of drug therapeutics and pharmaceutical calculations; strong oral and written communication; computer proficiency (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

Experience:

Clinical experience commensurate with PharmD program requirements; fulfillment of internship hours.

Pay Range
$61,006.40 USD – $61,006.40 USD per year. This range represents the annual base salary the organization reasonably expects to offer for this position; actual compensation will be based on factors such as seniority, education, training, experience, certifications, geography, and job responsibilities.
