Position Overview
Veterinary Technician 2: Large Animal Surgery – Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon. Classified Staff, Full‑time, Benefits eligible.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care (70% of time): Perform veterinary nursing duties across all hospital service areas – intake, diagnostics, anesthesia, surgery, critical care, specialty medicine, rural veterinary service, theriogenology, and after‑hours/emergency care.
Student Instruction (27%): Assist and teach veterinary students in basic techniques.
Training & Development (3%): Provide ongoing training to staff and students.
Qualifications
Current Veterinary Technician certification and ability to obtain Oregon certification within six months of hire.
Experience with large animal veterinary care and animal handling/restraint in a clinical setting.
Knowledge of drugs and medications, aseptic techniques, patient preparation, operating‑room procedures, anesthesia equipment, record keeping, medical terminology, animal anatomy & physiology, lifesaving procedures, vital mathematics (dosage, fluid rates).
General computer skills.
Valid driver’s license may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
≥ 2 years of large animal veterinary nursing experience in a teaching hospital or clinic.
Extensive knowledge of large animal veterinary nursing across all care aspects.
Demonstrated ability to instruct others in veterinary techniques.
Working Conditions & Schedule
7 days/week, 24‑hour hospital; weekend and holiday work may be required.
Exposure to noxious odors, infectious disease agents, chemicals, anesthetic gases, radiation, loud noise, wet or slippery floors, machinery.
Controlled substance access with responsible drug administration.
Physical demands: lifting up to 50 lbs, moving objects up to 200 lbs, frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, crawling as necessary.
Overtime, evening, on‑call, weekend hours required.
Compensation & Benefits
