Job Summary
The School Nurse will support and promote the connection between health and academic achievement and attend to the duties of the position for the duration of the assignment.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Supervise health paraprofessionals and other unlicensed assistive personnel at schools and within the district. Monitor performance in accordance with District and CDE policies.
Ensure safe delegation to and monitor performance of delegated tasks by unlicensed assistive personnel under the provisions of the Colorado Nurse Practice Act (CRS 12-38-1010).
Act as a resource person throughout the district for health information, interpretation of medical information, community resources, and related matters.
Individualized Health Care Plans
Interview parents/guardians and/or health care providers by home or office visit, medical record review, or telephone to obtain all information needed for a plan.
Develop Individualized Health Care Plans in accordance with 34 CFR Part 104, CRS 22-1-119.5, and review with parents/guardians prior to enactment.
Train and/or delegate essential staff on procedures described in the plan.
Monitor the efficacy of the plan on an ongoing basis and review annually.
Communication and Instruction
Provide resources for health information, medical information, and community resources.
Train personnel in health issues, screening procedures, and delegated medical procedures as appropriate per the Colorado Nurse Practice Act.
Offer individual counseling, conduct classes, or provide written communication on specific health issues.
Medical Emergency Response
Be available by phone to health paraprofessionals and staff for questions or guidance during emergencies.
Facilitate debriefing with all involved staff after an emergency to strengthen processes and ensure safety.
Ensure all accident/incident reports are completed.
Health Education
Provide preventative health education (e.g., growth and development, hygiene, safety, teen pregnancy, nutrition) through classroom and individual instruction.
Offer instruction on specific student health issues.
Participate in and promote employee wellness programs at the school and district level.
Survey trends related to student health issues, including absenteeism, mental, physical, and oral health.
Special Education and Section 504 Evaluation
Attend weekly SPED team meetings at assigned schools.
Interview parents/guardians and/or health care providers to obtain medical information for health care plans.
Enter health histories into the electronic IEP and 504 systems.
Attend IEP and 504 meetings when health history is required.
Serve as a medical professional on the 504 team.
Child Find and Transition Meetings
Attend Child Find meetings to evaluate or review records, obtain health history, and conduct vision and hearing screenings.
Attend transition meetings for children with medical issues (Kindergarten, elementary to middle school, middle school to high school).
Stay current on public health issues and relay information to administration, staff, and families.
Assess and recommend on environmental hazards and safety issues.
Assist in developing policies for a safe and healthy school environment.
Communicable Disease and Pandemic Programs
Support district programs through identification, follow‑up monitoring, referral, education, immunization screening, and coordination during outbreaks or events.
Clinical Responsibilities
Perform first aid and/or appropriate medical follow‑up when unlicensed assistive personnel is unable or when nursing judgment is required.
Coordinate, perform, and enter data for health screenings such as vision, hearing, and immunizations.
Maintain clinic equipment and supplies in coordination with assistive personnel.
Substance Abuse Support
Assist students identified as abusing drugs or alcohol and coordinate follow‑up with families and community resources, respecting HIPAA and FERPA laws.
Provide support to risk and threat assessment teams.
Medicaid Billing
Complete and submit Medicaid billing monthly.
Train and supervise assistive personnel in Medicaid billing processes and ensure compliance.
Actively participate in district and community health‑related committees.
Other Duties
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Training, and Experience
Associate's Degree or higher in Nursing and current CPR certification.
Valid Colorado Registered Nursing License or a valid multi‑state license under the nurse licensure compact.
Possess or be eligible for a Colorado Department of Education Special Services Provider License with a School Nurse endorsement.
Completion of field experiences and a supervised practicum, including experiences with school‑age children in community or school settings.
At least three years of experience as an RN; School, Public Health, and/or Pediatric Nursing experience is preferred.
Criminal background check and District fingerprinting required.
