Overview
Reports directly to the designated immediate manager for the specific practice or outpatient department. Responsible for scheduling patient appointments, interviewing patients to obtain appropriate demographic and financial information, and registering patients. Obtains necessary signatures and documentation for billing and insurance purposes. Orders laboratory and other tests via the computer system at the physicians’ direction. Performs end‑of‑day disposition and gathers statistical information. Announces patient arrivals, answers incoming telephone calls, and serves as a liaison between patients, nurses, physicians, and others. Provides excellent customer service and greets patients entering the department or practice. A multi‑skilled professional dedicated to assisting in all aspects of medical practice under the direct supervision of a licensed physician.

Qualifications

Age of Patients Served: All age groups.

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Specific coursework: Employees hired on or after February 15, 2018 must graduate from an approved Medical Assistant program.

Necessary Skills:

Excellent decision‑making skills and initiative.

Very detail‑oriented.

Excellent verbal communication skills in English.

Basic arithmetic skills necessary for cashiering.

Data entry experience required.

Ability to prioritize tasks and organize workflow.

Ability to handle stressful situations in a professional customer‑service manner.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks.

Knowledge of ambulatory health care or related health care fields.

Skilled in conflict resolution.

Required Licensure/Certifications:

Employees hired on or after August 1, 2021 must obtain medical assistant certification within six months of hire/transfer.

Current BLS from the American Heart Association.

Preferred Licensure/Certifications:

ICD‑9 and CPT coding preferred.

Completion of a standard terminology course helpful but not required.

Required Experience: Less than one year of related experience.

Preferred Experience: Two to four years of clerical/customer‑service experience preferred, ideally in a health‑care related industry. One year experience with third‑party payors and computer experience for inputting data and reviewing patient demographics preferred. Prefer one year Medical Assistant experience.
