Description of Work
DSDHH is hiring! DSDHH is seeking an American Sign Language interpreter with a passion for communication access and inclusion to join us a Staff Interpreter. The Staff ASL Interpreter provides direct interpretation/transliteration services, including tactile ASL, to DSDHH staff, primarily those in the central/administrative office. The Staff Interpreter evaluates and assesses communication access needs in order to provide coordination support to the Interpreter for the Director. This individual will provide mentorship and interpreter skill development opportunities. Interpreters seeking licensure will consult with the Staff Interpreter. This position provides consultation to the Department of Health and Human Services and other entities regarding communication access, the use of interpreters, and interpreter licensure. Must be licensed as determined by the NC Interpreter and Transliterator Licensing Board before start of employment.

Salary Range

$55,221 - $96,639.

Recruitment Range

$55,221 - $80,650.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Advanced interpreting skills in both ASL to English and English to ASL, including the ability to interpret and transliterate in a variety of settings, for a variety of customers, and with various registers including formal and intimate while accurately representing the message of the speaker(s).

Thorough knowledge of deafness, deaf culture, American Sign Language, interpreting practices and processing models.

Experience with monitoring, assessing, and evaluating interpreting skills in others.

Minimum Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an interpreter training program from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of professional interpreting experience in a community, business, or government program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification If applicable as defined by GS 90D, meets the requirements for licensure as determined by the North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator Licensing Board.
