Correctional Counselor Supervisor

Summary Statement
A class incumbent is responsible for supervising counseling staff providing rehabilitation services to adult offenders incarcerated in correctional institutions or assigned to Community Corrections. Supervises a staff of 3-8 professional employees.

Essential Functions
Develops, implements, and evaluates treatment programs, recommending modifications or changes as appropriate. Plans, assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of staff; conducts staff meetings/conferences and training sessions as required. Interviews and makes recommendations regarding the selection of candidates for counseling and support positions. Provides technical guidance to subordinates ensuring that services are provided to inmates/clients within departmental/institutional constraints. Serves on a variety of boards and committees. Conducts individual/group counseling sessions with inmates/clients, assesses information obtained and develops appropriate treatment plans. Prepares a variety of records, reports and summaries and maintains caseload files. Maintains liaison with institutions, courts, community agencies and organizations concerning correctional institutions and inmate/client treatment programs and rehabilitation.

Job Requirements

Three years experience in case management, including assessing, planning, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating services to meet an individual's human service needs.

Three years experience in behavior management, such as understanding, explaining, describing, and predicting behavior; studying the connection between behavior and its causes; and identifying appropriate behavior modification strategies for individual situations.

Three years experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.

Three years experience providing rehabilitation services to adult offenders, including evaluating progress, adjusting treatment plans, analyzing social and criminal history, and participating in interdisciplinary conferencing.

Six months experience in narrative report writing.

Six months experience using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve, inquire, and report on data.

Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through coursework, training, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others, or supervising staff, or supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Applicants may only apply if they are current permanent employees of the State of Delaware Department of Correction in a position covered by the Merit System who have completed their initial probationary period.
