About The Department

The Missiakas Research lab is part of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Chicago. It investigates the basic principles of microbial interactions with their hosts. Research topics include the study of viral and bacterial pathogens to better understand disease outcomes and improve therapies. The lab also investigates the contribution of the microbiome in maintaining health and preventing disease, and to derive novel therapies. This at‑will position is partially funded by contractual grant funding; employment is contingent upon continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.
Job Summary

The Research Technical Assistant provides technical support for scientific research projects. In this role, the individual executes experiments, maintains a detailed daily laboratory notebook, analyzes and summarizes data in written reports, and presents research findings.
Responsibilities

Perform basic cell and molecular biology experiments including growing bacterial and mammalian cultures, cloning, genetic manipulations, microscopy, biochemistry, and purification of proteins.
Collaborate and communicate with other laboratory members.
Write concise research notes and reports.
Provide technical and administrative support in a laboratory environment, performing basic laboratory techniques under direction.
Collect data and assist in data analysis and preparation of reports, manuscripts, and other documents.
Comply with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.
Perform other related work as needed.
Education

Minimum qualifications include vocational training, apprenticeships, or equivalent experience in a related field; a four‑year degree is not necessarily required.
Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment toward one is preferred.
Experience

Minimum less than 2 years of work experience in a related discipline.
Basic knowledge of molecular biology and microbiology is desirable.
Preferred Competencies

Analytical skills.

Pay and Benefits

Pay range: $19.23 – $26.44 per hour.
