Clinical Data Scientist

Job Summary and Responsibilities
This role is responsible for staffing and leading collaborative efforts to design, develop, test, implement, and maintain data modeling and analytics solutions for use in clinical, quality, and population health improvement at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH). The incumbent will represent data in reports, dashboards, quantitative analytic models, and interactive analysis tools, conceptualizing and developing analytic solutions to address VMFH's complex challenges using a variety of data science techniques and tools. The role anticipates and supports the information needs of clinical and business partners, enabling data‑driven decision‑making and contributing to a culture of collaborative analytics throughout the organization.

The work includes collaborating with front‑line clinicians, administrative leaders, and information systems personnel to expand advanced clinical analytics capabilities and relevant components of the data and analytics infrastructure while maintaining high standards of data governance in alignment with industry and regulatory standards.

Key technical requirements include knowledge of hierarchical and relational database design and application development (SQL Server, SSIS, VBA, ODBC, AWS) and experience working with Epic EMR data sets in Clarity and Caboodle. Familiarity with EMR reporting, business intelligence tools, data architecture, technical documentation, and end‑user training and support is also required.

Key Responsibilities
• Directly query Epic EMR data sets in Clarity and Caboodle (requires Epic certification).

• Facilitate data‑influenced decision making across VMFH, creating actionable insights for management and clinical leadership.

• Serve as an internal subject matter expert and consultant on clinical, quality, data governance, and population health data and sources.

• Develop, validate, apply, and maintain scalable data models, including visualizations, statistical models, and predictive/prescriptive (machine learning) models.

• Continuously review and update deliverables to align with regulatory, contractual, and evidence‑based quality metrics; research and apply industry best practices in population health analytics and data management.

• Work closely with clinicians and business intelligence staff to ensure the integrity of clinical data used for analytics and reporting, including initiatives to define and validate new clinical data mart tables.

• Build competencies in advanced predictive analytics methods and data consolidation under mentorship.

• Consult with stakeholders to understand business needs, identify viable technological solutions, and prepare detailed specifications and workflow diagrams for interfaces, applications, and databases.

• Design, develop, document interfaces and applications, test new or updated tools, troubleshoot issues, transition programs to production, and conduct end‑user training.

• Maintain and update interfaces and applications, making changes to tables, logic, and tools as needed, and coordinating with IT during system upgrades.

• Serve as the point person for technical issues, troubleshooting, and timely resolution of problems.

• Provide internal consulting on data management concepts and tools, and facilitate automation of end‑user processes.

• Perform procedures to ensure the security and safety of information systems assets, implementing appropriate security procedures.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a quantitative discipline (BS in mathematics, statistics, health services research, informatics, epidemiology, or a research‑oriented MPH) and three years of related work experience in quantitative data analysis, including one year in a healthcare context.

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

EPIC Certification required.

Pay Range
$45.06 - $67.03 /hour
