Job Summary
We’re seeking a skilled and safety‑focused Chief Mechanic to lead daily fleet maintenance and repairs. This hands‑on role oversees shop operations, supports seasonal mechanics, and ensures vehicles meet DOT standards. You'll diagnose issues, perform repairs, and keep accurate records to help keep our fleet running safely and efficiently.

Position Type: Full-time, year‑round with a 6-week furlough period
Start Date: Immediately
Pay: $32.20/hour
Schedule: Typical schedule is 40 hours, 5 days per week (may include weekends, evenings, and holidays)
Housing: Employee housing is not available

Responsibilities
Perform routine maintenance on assigned company fleet equipment with emphasis on safety and cost control.
Oversee the mechanics to ensure jobs are completed on time and safely.
Diagnose vehicle problems and perform corrective maintenance.
Make road calls and be able to perform roadside maintenance and repairs.
Contribute insight and suggestions into vehicle maintenance program.
Complete accurate work orders showing labor and materials used to perform each job and input work order into the company’s Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
Be able to order shop supplies and historic parts for the buses and fleet using the company’s Purchase Ordering software.
Remain current with industry standards.
Interact with all departments to provide necessary vehicle support.
Personal safety and shop safety.
Assist in other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Ability to work with minimal supervision and leadership skills.
Knowledgeable about vehicle repair techniques and have an extensive mechanical aptitude.
Knowledge of DOT Regulations concerning the maintenance of a commercial fleet.
Keep abreast of vehicle repair techniques for both fleet vehicles and commercial diesel trucks.
Communication and organizational skills.
Computer skills a plus.
Must be at least 19 years of age and at least 21 years of age if you will be using a CDL in the scope of work.
Previous experience with scan tools to diagnose vehicle issues.
ASE Certification required (can be obtained upon hire).
Work Environment
Garage environment with minimal office duties/responsibilities in an office environment. You may be exposed to loud noises, extreme heat or cold minimally throughout the year.
Supervisory Responsibility
Minimal supervisory responsibility for seasonal mechanic(s) partnering with the Transportation Director and the Garage Manager.
Physical Requirements
Position requires a valid U.S. Driver's License (CDL preferred but not required).
Must meet all DOT physical requirements and pass a DOT physical exam including a pre‑employment drug screen and federally required random screens throughout the season.
Compliance with the Xanterra Driver Safety Program and Policy.
May be necessary to comfortably lift 75 lbs. on a periodic basis.
Potentially required to stand, stretch, and bend continuously for up to a 10‑hour day.
Periodically required to work in confined spaces (i.e. under vehicles) or in strenuous positions for various lengths of time throughout the day.
