Job Summary
Patient Care Technician I (PCT I) under the direction of a licensed clinician performs a variety of patient care activities, assisting nurses, physicians, and other team members in caring for patients in the Extended Care Unit.
Major Responsibilities
Provide clear, timely communication to RN about patient observations and changes (skin condition, vital signs, mental status).
Observe high‑risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee.
Participate in creating and maintaining a safe environment; use interventions to de‑escalate patients and, if necessary, apply restraints per training.
Assist patients with daily living activities: personal hygiene, ambulation, meals and nourishment.
Assist in moving, lifting, positioning and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.
Perform patient‑safety checks, use fall‑prevention devices, and follow restraint‑policy standards for restrained patients.
Takes and records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, BP, pulse oximetry) and measures weight and height.
Perform EKGs, Point‑of‑Care tests and bladder scanning; collect, label and prepare specimens for transport to lab.
Phlebotomy in certain locations.
Carry out unit‑specific procedures such as telemetry battery changes, equipment checks, cleaning between patients, and proper storage of supplies.
Assist the RN or Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures: prepare patient, obtain equipment, help position, provide emotional support, and clean supplies after the procedure.
Observe, measure, and record oral food and fluid intake; refill tube‑feeding bags; record output from fistulas, ostomies, or drainage systems; perform ostomy care as directed.
Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs, building positive rapport.
Provide respectful, culturally and age‑appropriate communication with patients, staff, family, visitors, and others.
Replenish patient and unit supplies and equipment as needed.
Request assistance from identified resources when additional direction is required.
Stay current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards, bulletin boards, and UMMHC e‑mail.
Comply with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
Attend scheduled meetings, conferences and seminars as required.
Use quality‑improvement principles in daily operations.
Comply with health and safety regulations.
Respect diverse views, demonstrate Standards of Respect, and contribute to a professional, tolerant, civil, and accepting environment.
Maintain reliable, predictable attendance.
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Minimum high‑school education or GED.
Current Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of employment.
Evidence of competency at Patient Care Technician I level, including at least 800 work hours and 6 months as a PCT I, OR at least 6 months of prior inpatient/outpatient direct patient‑care experience.
Ability to read, write and communicate in English clearly and concisely.
Basic medical terminology knowledge.
Basic computer skills.
Strong interpersonal skills to gather information from individuals and build collaborative relationships.
Proven problem‑solving abilities for routine situations.
Ability to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.
Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements if certification or licensure is not strictly required.
Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions
Position requires work indoors in a patient‑care environment. Hand dexterity, hearing and vision are needed to take direction from patients or providers, adjust equipment, observe and describe patient observations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work is of heavy demand, requiring standing and walking most of the time with the possibility of pushing heavy equipment and bending frequently.
