Rural Action True Pigments Capacity Builder VISTA
AmeriCorps, The Plains, OH, United States
Overview
As the True Pigments VISTA, you will play a key role in advancing an innovative, community-driven approach to restoring Appalachian waterways impacted by acid mine drainage. Your service will strengthen local capacity by recruiting volunteers, researching new uses for recovered iron oxide, and supporting the early stages of a Brownfields grant that could lead to a full-scale water treatment and pigment production facility at the Truetown AMD site. This position offers hands-on learning in environmental restoration, community engagement, and project development, with opportunities to collaborate closely with Rural Action staff, local partners, and regional stakeholders. You’ll serve primarily in Athens County as part of a small, supportive team, with some flexibility for teleservice depending on project needs. The project serves low-income communities, unemployed individuals, low-income adults, low-income youth, and individuals/families experiencing homelessness, with targeted populations including Morgan County agriculture communities (Chesterhill region), displaced coal miners in southeastern Ohio, and low-income or homeless residents in multiple counties.
