Program Assistant

Under the supervision of the Health, Wellness and Program Director, the Program Assistant provides friendly, professional, courteous, and prompt membership service to all members, clients, and volunteers of the YMCA. The Program Assistant ensures a safe, clean, well‑maintained, and welcoming environment and, when staff are absent, is directly responsible for the entire Central Division facility, including parking lot areas, building security, and the general well‑being of members.

Responsibilities

Assist in organizing, implementing, and promoting assigned programs or special events for teens, adults, families, and active older adults.

Stay informed of all current and upcoming programs and special events to interpret YMCA membership and program information to members and potential members, thereby increasing participation.

Provide tours to potential new members, explaining facility, policies, and membership rates while promoting programs and memberships.

Adhere to YMCA emergency procedures, including notifying the appropriate staff person(s).

Make continuous hourly rounds throughout all areas of the building to remain visible and available to members.

Respond immediately to all requests, comments, and complaints, referring them to the supervisor or appropriate staff person.

Provide backup to Membership Service Desk Staff when they are cashing in/out or on an “as needed” basis.

Adhere to all fiscal policies and procedures such as petty cash, member registration, and the membership desk.

Maintain timely collection and appropriate safekeeping of Central Division funds.

Supervision of Personnel: None.

Ensure a safe environment for all members.

Assist in preparing for class and program setup, including clearing gym/program space, setting up equipment, moving fans, and cleaning the gym floor.

During scheduled building rounds, collect from locker rooms and treat the laundering of all towels.

Adhere to facility closing procedures: lock all doors, close windows, turn off lights, inspect and shut down saunas and steam rooms, secure the pool, and return all used towels to laundry receptacles.

Ensure the free weight room (Strength Fitness Center) is properly picked up according to supervisor’s system.

Clean all recreation and gym floors as assigned using the damp towel method prior to all classes, programs, or special events.

Follow facility opening procedures: unlock doors, turn on lights, check equipment, and verify overall facility cleanliness.

During inclement weather, shovel and salt/de‑ice front and back walks and ensure members have safe access to the Y and parking lots.

Requirements

High School Diploma

Must maintain CPR certification

Ability to lift up to 100 lbs

Must be able to walk up and down stairs
