
2026-27 Security and Safety Specialist - North Canyon HS

Job Purpose Statement: The Security and Safety Specialist is responsible for providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for the safety and welfare of students, staff, and community members while on school grounds and in alignment with school and district policy and procedures.
Location: North Canyon High School. Non-Interim Position. Duration 9 months, 4 hrs/day. Grade 14, $15.94/hr. Dates: 8/3/2026 – 5/27/2027. Reports to Site Administration.
Essential Functions
Communicates safety and security policies and procedures to students, staff and visitors to ensure their understanding and maintain a positive campus climate.
Monitors student behavior before, during, and after school, including lunchroom, classrooms with substitutes, detention, open areas, athletic events, and other assignments as directed.
Patrols school facilities (grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots) to provide visibility, maintain safety and security, and promote a positive campus environment.
Assists with the implementation of the school’s emergency response plan during lockdowns, evacuations, shelter‑in‑place, and other emergencies.
Prepares written materials to document student behavior activities, providing written reference of activities and conveying information.
Provides traffic and parking control to maintain efficient traffic flow and use of parking lots.
Refers incidents (personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, rule violations, etc.) to appropriate site personnel for follow‑up in accordance with administrative, site security, and student safety guidelines.
Responds to various situations (accidents, injuries, vandalism, alarms, etc.) by taking appropriate actions to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
Participates in unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, etc. to convey and/or gather information required to perform job functions.
Supports and enhances campus culture through practices that encourage students to understand the impact of their actions, be reflective, and find a means to make amends.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit and campus social‑emotional well‑being.
May assist or be assigned to other district campuses as needed.
Participates in district/local in‑service training.
Attends district behavioral safety training for de‑escalation strategies.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills:
Adherence to safety practices; operation of standard office equipment and software; preparation and maintenance of accurate records.
Knowledge:
Basic mathematics; understanding of written procedures; ability to write routine documents; clear verbal expression; knowledge of health standards, hazards, safety practices, and procedures.
Abilities:
Scheduling activities; collating data; using basic job‑related equipment; flexibility to work with others; independence in data interpretation; moderate problem‑solving with equipment; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; prioritizing tasks; adapting to changing work priorities.
Responsibility
Working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; utilization of resources from other work units may be required; continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Work Environment
Physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Typical job composition: 35% sitting, 50% walking, 15% standing. Exposure to temperature extremes, risk of injury, and illness conditions.
Experience
Job‑related experience desired.

High school diploma or equivalent.
