Job Summary
This role, under the general supervision of the Supervisor, Manager or Laboratory Director, permits the Medical Laboratory Technician to perform tests requiring limited skill and responsibility and exercise independent judgment minimally, as competency is demonstrated. The Technician maintains acceptable accuracy in inpatient, quality assurance, proficiency and competency testing, uses clinical/theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret and report lab data, and supports laboratory productivity and communication.

Day shift (United States of America).

Core Responsibilities

Maintain acceptable accuracy in patient, quality assurance, proficiency and competency testing.

Meet department standards for correct specimen identification and error rates in testing or reporting patient or QC results.

Consistently document investigations and correct interpretations of QA failures or trends.

Earn satisfactory scores in proficiency testing and personnel competency testing.

Maintain instrumentation for testing.

Analyze, investigate, interpret and report lab data using clinical/theoretical knowledge.

Report lab data accurately and in a timely manner.

Recognize the relationship between lab data and clinical findings or expectations.

Initiate investigations of problems and work toward resolution.

Interpret information from multiple sources.

Practice information monitoring, investigation, resolution, and hand‑off to team members.

Comply with the Pending Log procedure for tracking laboratory test status.

Document in the LIS all elements of the Notification Value Call procedure.

Hand off information to others according to departmental procedures and chain of command.

Adhere to WellStar Standards of Behavior consistently.

Take personal responsibility for corrective action in response to constructive criticism.

Practice organizational skills for efficient use of time, materials, cost, and completion of testing.

Meet deadlines for turn‑around times required by the department.

Meet department‑defined standards for organizational skills and productivity.

Practice cost‑efficient work processes that maintain high‑quality laboratory data.

Maintain current personal training, education, and practice of policies and procedures.

Maintain current knowledge and practice of WellStar policies and procedures, including the LIS.

Demonstrate adequate knowledge of laboratory regulatory compliance.

Practice all WellStar and laboratory safety standards.

Participate in meetings, committees, task forces, and project teams.

Complete monthly, quarterly, or yearly educational requirements.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Comply with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education

Associate’s degree in Medical Technology or equivalent Certificate in Medical Technology.

Required Minimum Certifications

MLT(AAB) – Medical Laboratory Technician

MLT(AMT) – Medical Laboratory Technician

MLT(ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Technician

Additional Certifications
For individuals who possess the technician qualifications and have recently moved into the state or completed the academic and/or training requirements, they may be temporarily classified as technicians for eighteen (18) months to afford them an opportunity to successfully complete an approved qualifying examination, within 1‑1/2 years.

Required Minimum Experience
Minimum 1 year laboratory experience (preferred).

Accuracy: Maintain acceptable accuracy in inpatient, quality assurance, proficiency and competency testing.

Critical Thinking: Use clinical/theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret and report lab data.

Job Knowledge: Maintain current personal training, education, and practice of policies and procedures.

Productivity: Practice organizational skills for efficient use of time, materials, cost, and availability of lab data.

Communication: Practice information monitoring, investigation, resolution, and hand‑off to team members.
