Summary
Average 30-50 patients per day, including inpatient phlebotomy, morning rounds, stocking, supply help, front desk processing, etc. The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Position Responsibilities
Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc.
Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
Properly explains the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear but courteous manner.
Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Fully understand all of the physician's orders.
Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% correct.
Package specimens for transport.
Stores specimen samples according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by the protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attend annual department trainings.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed as required in some states.
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High School Diploma or GED.
Requires a minimum 2 to 4 years of experience.
Requires pediatric and geriatric experience.
Prefer hospital experience.
