Deck Manager - Safety Around Water

Overview
Ensures leadership, instruction, and motivation for participants in swimming lessons. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety, engagement, youth development, and healthy living in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. While on duty, the position is responsible for swim instructor supervision and ensuring instructors are meeting essential job functions. The role involves traveling throughout Houston to Safety Around Water sites with the Association’s Safety Around Water team; transportation will be provided from site to site.

Responsibilities

Knows and understands all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately and appropriately, in accordance with YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.

Maintains all required certifications, in accordance with YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.

Conducts swim lessons, as needed, in accordance with YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.

Prepares for the first day of each swim session by communicating with parents, conducting parent orientation, planning class layout, and preparing/assigning rosters; oversees skill tests to divide classes.

Observes lessons to ensure instructors are developing swimming and water safety skills using effective organizational patterns, observation, instructional flotation devices, and teaching techniques, adjusting for each participant’s developmental needs.

Creates and models positive parent and participant experiences through member engagement, interaction, and communication.

Holds instructors accountable for a positive student experience by providing effective feedback, celebrating success, and encouraging progress.

Holds instructors accountable for creating a positive parent experience by providing a first‑day orientation, interacting before and after each lesson, giving constructive feedback, and providing opportunities for at‑home learning.

Addresses parent concerns, works with instructors to adapt for participant needs, and communicates with the Aquatics Director as needed.

Distributes participant surveys at the end of each session, addressing concerns with instructors and Director.

Maintains accurate records of attendance and progress, as required by YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.

Performs daily equipment checks and reports damaged equipment.

Assists and attends all staff meetings and trainings, as required by YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.

Coordinates private swim lesson requests and scheduling.

Monitors Daxko registration and works with the Aquatics Director to schedule instructors and combine or expand classes as needed.

Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.

Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.

Meets timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance (e.g., Kronos Workforce Ready review and approval of time sheets).

Qualifications

Minimum age of 18 years and at least 5 years older than the oldest participant.

Demonstrates Swim Instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.

Current (or must obtain prior to first scheduled shift): YMCA Swim Instructor Certification, ASHI certification for CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen, YOTS Child Abuse Prevention Training, Information Security and Awareness, Workplace Harassment and Bullying, Universal Precautions, and New Staff Orientation Assessment.

At least one year of teaching experience required; YMCA Swim lesson experience preferred with a working knowledge of the current program design.

Ability to instruct, observe, and provide positive feedback for swim instructors and participants in proper stroke development techniques.

Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and taste and smell. The employee must frequently move and/or lift up to 50 pounds. The employee must possess adequate vision and hearing to safely monitor and maintain an aquatic environment and children, and must remain alert, continuously scanning all areas of the pool with clear vision and perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue. The employee must be able to hear voices, distinguish distress signals, and communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in both normal and loud situations.
