University Medical Center Tucson PBCs Banner – a nationally recognized institution offering exceptional patient care, teaching, and research. The campus also includes Diamond Children’s with specialized pediatric services and a Level 1 Trauma Center. The hospital’s physicians are full‑time faculty of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting clinicians and nursing staff in providing medical care, as well as implementing and evaluating direct patient care. It utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to deliver an excellent patient experience.

CORE FUNCTIONS

Prepares patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms, and other necessary measurements and recording chief complaint. Documents pain scores as appropriate and reports any changes in patient condition to the clinician.

Assists providers with exams and minor in‑office procedures, which may include taking blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate/pulse, taking temperature, performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation, and EKGs. Acts as chaperone as needed and follows universal precautions at all times.

Coordinates and manages patient care including pre‑certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling for clinic, hospital, and ancillary services. Communicates test results to the patient and serves as a resource to the clinician for optimal care. May administer medications per established policies or as directed.

Provides clerical support with patient notifications and documentation, completing medical records for labs, authorizations, X‑rays, hospital records, and previous care related to each patient visit. Ensures accurate billing information is furnished promptly.

Maintains a clean, functional environment, including disinfection of equipment, exam rooms, and storage areas. Follows manufacturer recommendations and OSHA guidelines for hazardous substances and performs basic maintenance of equipment.

Orders supplies as directed and stocks patient care areas, handling medication ordering and related tasks such as expiration checks and recalls.

Develops and maintains effective communication mechanisms with all external and internal customers, exemplifying service orientation and teamwork.

Completes all necessary onboarding and orientation activities, including simulation training, as directed.

Works under direct supervision of providers and interacts with all staff levels, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts such as other health institutions, community providers, and agencies. Prioritizes data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses to changes in health status.

Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers of Banner Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating core and leader behaviors each day.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge. Completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations.

Active Medical Assistant Certification is required. Certification or additional training must meet the requirements for meaningful use. BLS certification required. Active certifications such as Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) with current membership from the relevant professional body.

Requires strong computer skills, including the ability to work with medical software. Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to manage multiple changing priorities effectively and organized.

Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, and BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a behavioral health clinical setting that serves children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it throughout employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with office medical procedures and treatments, and knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, EMR, and scheduling software.

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
