Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Active Licensed Veterinary Technician in the State of Georgia or ability to transfer qualified licensure from another applicable state.

Experience working within an Orthopedic area of a veterinary hospital or private veterinary specialty clinic.

Position Summary
The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine teaching hospital is seeking a licensed veterinary technician to join our Orthopedics service. The LVT in the Orthopedics service area works with small animal patients who are in the hospital for emergent health issues or planned visits. Duties include diagnostic imaging (radiography, CT scanning), pre-, peri-, and post-operative care for surgical patients, monitoring under anesthesia, maintaining the surgical suite and equipment, proper animal restraint, supervising students, patient grooming, IV catheter placement, dietary administration as prescribed, exercising patients, collecting blood/urine/tissue samples, submitting samples for analysis, assisting with physical exams and diagnostic procedures, medicating patients, client communication, and mentoring other team members.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies

Graduation from an accredited Veterinary Technician program and VTNE certification with ability to obtain and hold Georgia LVT license within 6 months of employment.

Experience handling animals and working in high-stress environments.

Phlebotomy proficiency in animals; basic weight/dose calculations; knowledge of animal anatomy.

Physical Demands

Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Prolonged standing, walking, and varied postures on hard surfaces; use of protective gear (mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, goggles).

Duties/Responsibilities

Attend and provide input during patient rounds; organize receiving schedule; complete patient status reports; perform client follow-ups; perform technician appointments; assist with patient receiving; assist with specimen collection; enter VETVIEW requests and service input; communicate with clinicians; manage referrals and charges.

Provide sedation and assistance to radiology to expedite imaging; coordinate surgical cases with anesthesia; manage RX refills and lab results; monitor patient billing status and deposits; field inquiries and calls for clinicians.

Technical Duties

Patient physical assessment, catheterization, phlebotomy, cystocentesis, injections, medications, IV fluids, and other technical duties related to receiving, surgery, patient care, sedation and anesthesia.

Perform sedation, analgesia and anesthesia; administer and monitor drugs, calculate dosages, manage adverse effects, and respond to life-threatening emergencies; assist with CPR.

More Duties/Responsibilities

Pre- and post-surgical patient care: clipping, prepping, flushing, bandaging, casting, wound care; suture/staple management; surgical scrubbing and circulating roles; administer medications and provide pain management; perform laboratory procedures; maintain medical records and track long-term outcomes.
