Overview
Brief Description
Job Objective : Professional Registered Nurse working in the Mental Health Department will be oriented to the Standards of Professional Practice during the initial orientation phase. Under the direction of the Director of Mental Health Services, is accountable and responsible for the psychiatric nursing care of patients within the department, guided by policies and procedures of the Medical Center.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Mental Health Registered Nurse is expected to provide a safe environment and will protect the patient from untoward events and work as part of Nursing Services.
Safety
Ensure each patient is wearing the correct hospital name band for positive identification prior to initiating treatment, medications and procedures, per Medical Center policy.
Provide nursing interventions to meet physical and emotional needs of the patient while actively participating in direct patient care for different populations, including adults in open and/or locked unit settings.
Observe patients for signs of intolerance to medications; report Adverse Drug Reactions to Pharmacy per policy and procedure.
If seclusion or restraint is necessary for patient safety, apply restraints and/or place the patient in seclusion per Medical Center policy.
Face-to-face assessment and documentation of patients in restraints and seclusion within one hour.
Quality of Care
Complete firearm assessment and advisement on patients during admission.
Assess patients from the Emergency Department for possible admission to the MH Department; complete required paperwork.
Provide assessments and evaluations throughout the Medical Center as needed.
Lead different group sessions and participate actively in Performance Improvement Teams/Committees in the department.
Provide patient education on a routine basis, documenting all teaching on established hospital form(s).
Review and update the plan of care on patients in the department; document revisions in the medical record.
Appropriate documentation in HED.
All part-time and full-time Mental Health Nurses must become LPS certified as soon as eligible to take the LA County examination. Per Diem Mental Health Nurses are encouraged to take the examination.
Take action to achieve performance goals; participate in hand-off shift-to-shift reports and 24-hour chart checks; conduct Suicide Risk Assessments.
Participate in evidence-based practice, discharge planning, and performance improvement; use quality-of-care results to initiate changes in nursing practice and healthcare delivery; incorporate patient and family perspectives as appropriate.

Back-Up/Relief Charge Nurse
Has thorough knowledge of mental disorders and demonstrates the ability to care for the psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and learning needs of patients and families. Serves as a role model, supports the AVMC mission, and stays in communication with the Director of Mental Health Services or designee.
Knowledge of admissions, transfers, and discharges; completes transfer paperwork; manages unit operations per staffing and scheduling plans.
Provides leadership, planning, and supervision; ensures adequate staffing; assigns shifts; maintains patient care standards; troubleshoots with medical staff.
Completes required assessments and documentation; monitors patient satisfaction; reports compliments/complaints to leadership; collects family feedback; maintains acuity/staffing reports; submits shift-end reports.
Non-Essential Duties
Supervises proper use of supplies, time, and equipment; assists in orienting new employees; other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge : Knowledge of the legal aspects of psychiatric/mental health nursing.
Abilities : Ability to write 5150 applications for involuntary detention; countersign 14-day and 30-day holds (as required by County of Los Angeles Department of Mental Health).
