Overview
Job Description
The Engineering Technician determines how each part will be manufactured, leveraging strengths in milling or turning to create efficient and reliable machining processes. This role focuses heavily on CNC programming and CAM work, including reviewing incoming parts, generating programs, selecting tooling, and defining machining strategies. The position also provides hands-on shop support, working closely with operators and engineers to resolve machining issues and ensure parts meet quality and tolerance requirements.
Responsibilities
Review incoming parts and decide the optimal manufacturing approach based on milling or turning capabilities.
Develop CNC programs for new and existing parts, ensuring efficient and repeatable machining processes.
Select appropriate tooling and define machining strategies, including tool paths, operations, and setups.
Determine how each part will be run, documenting the process plan and communicating it clearly to shop personnel.
Provide hands-on shop support to operators, assisting with issues related to tolerances, tooling, work holding, and general setup.
Collaborate with engineers and technicians to troubleshoot and resolve machine or process issues, including work holding and tooling problems.
Create or work from 3D models to support CAM programming and machining activities.
Generate 3D models and produce printed models when needed prior to machining to validate geometry and setup.
Focus on CAM programming for projects that already have 3D models, ensuring accurate and efficient tool paths.
Apply strong knowledge of metal cutting, feeds and speeds, and material behavior to optimize machining performance.
Use CAD and CAM software, including Fusion 360, to design fixtures and support machining operations.
Support engineering change orders (ECO/ECR) by updating programs, tooling, and process documentation as needed.
Ensure that machining processes align with quality control requirements, cost considerations, and material specifications.
Maintain clear documentation of programs, setups, and process changes to support repeatability and continuous improvement.
