Job Overview
Tetra Tech invites you to apply for a rewarding Geomechanics/Geotechnical/Construction Intern position in our Billings, MT office. The role offers one‑on‑one training with senior staff, cross‑functional interaction, and a fast integration into the team.

Responsibilities
In this role, the successful candidate will work primarily with our geotechnical engineering teams, supporting the development of site characterizations, construction oversight, construction materials testing, technical figure creation, technical reporting, and general project support. An interest in working with a multidisciplinary team of geologists, geophysicists, engineers, and data modelers is essential. Additional duties may include supporting active mine and abandoned mine site projects, environmental site monitoring, abandoned mine lands evaluations, mine permitting and compliance, and engineering design for mine site restoration.

Essential Job Functions
• Work closely with Principal and Project Engineers, Scientists, and Project Managers on geotechnical engineering and environmental projects.

• Conduct office and field work, including sample and data collection.

• Prepare site inventories, enhance Excel spreadsheets, and produce technical memoranda and reports.

• Create basic CAD‑ or GIS‑based figures, conduct construction materials testing, and complete quality checks.

• Summarize data for technical reports and develop accurate data tables.

• Apply strong problem‑solving, time‑management, written and verbal communication skills, and learn new skills and software programs (e.g., Gint, RSLog, APile, LPile, ArcGIS Pro).

• Travel for field data collection, construction oversight, environmental sampling, and site reconnaissance; minimum 60% travel required.

Required Qualifications

Successful completion of junior year of a 4‑year accredited university in geology, geophysics, earth science, geotechnical, civil or environmental engineering, or related discipline.

0‑2 years’ experience.

Education and career interests related to environmental aspects of the mining industry.

Computer literacy and proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Ability to travel and perform field tasks (minimum of 60% travel).

Pre‑employment drug screen in compliance with state regulations.

Valid driver’s license with a clean record.

Preferred Qualifications

Recent graduate with a BS in geotechnical, construction, geology, geophysics, earth science, civil or environmental engineering, or related discipline.

Proficiency in ArcGIS or CAD.

MSHA and/or OSHA HAZWOPER certification.

Physical Requirements

Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment up to 40lbs.

Occasional periods of sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer.

Frequent walking, lifting, and bending for field work.

Walking across variable terrain, in all weather conditions.

Travel and field work (approximately 60% travel required).

Work on active construction sites, behind a drill rig, and perform construction materials testing and occasional geotechnical lab testing.

Work Environment

Based out of the Billings, MT office with field travel; potential hybrid arrangement subject to supervisor review and company discretion. Candidate must reside within 75 miles of the office.

Field work includes exposure to weather, altitude, terrain, and noise.

Office work involves sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer.

Additional Information

Part‑time temporary position, no scheduled hours; hours vary with project/client needs.

Target Salary Range
$22.00 / hour to $24.00 / hour

– Pay determined by education, experience, skills, location, certifications, and other competencies.
