Position Overview
Under general supervision, the Behavioral Health Site Supervisor leads and supervises staff and program activities at a county Behavioral Health Department service site. Responsibilities include providing specialized and intensive behavioral health treatment, counseling, therapy, and services to department clients; scheduling officer‑of‑the‑day duties; maintaining facility security; serving as liaison with community, regional, or state agencies; and performing related duties as required. This classification is for a for‑cause, exempt position.
Responsibility Highlights
Serve as site supervisor, assisting with service and productivity monitoring, evaluating staff performance, writing performance evaluations, and making case assignments.
Perform officer‑of‑the‑day duties and provide crisis intervention services over the telephone and with walk‑in clients, including after‑hours on‑call support.
Offer staff consultation on complex and difficult cases and facilitate staff utilization of community resources.
Provide direct specialized behavioral health treatment, counseling, and therapy to individual clients; conduct evaluations, develop treatment and service plans, and implement site policies and procedures related to service delivery, record maintenance, and case documentation.
Serve as a liaison for the county with regional and state committees, organizations, and agencies.
Essential Functions
Counsel clients regarding health status, treatment plans, psychoactive medications, benefits, and medication side effects; provide health education on personal hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention; teach client care skills to families and others; consult with other Behavioral Health staff on care plans; administer injections; oversee client clinic care; order and securely store medications; maintain client health and medication records; refer individuals and families to appropriate agencies; conduct health appraisals; and prepare reports related to treatment and client progress.
Knowledge Of
Psychological and social aspects of emotional disturbances and mental illness.
Methods and techniques for psychological assessments of individuals.
Principles and methods of individual and group counseling.
Human behavior and development.
Available community resources for behavioral health services.
Problems and needs of seriously mentally ill clients.
Relevant laws and regulations concerning behavioral health and social services.
Basic knowledge of psychotropic medications.
Fiscal control principles.
Rehabilitation options within the Short‑Doyle Act, Medi‑Cal Services, Coordinated Care, and Managed Care Systems.
Desired Skills
Supervise program activities and lead team building at a Behavioral Health Services site.
Assess mental disorders, develop effective care plans, and conduct individual and group psychotherapy.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing, including with diverse ethnic and socioeconomic populations.
Explain complex terminology clearly and non‑threateningly.
Manage clinical documentation and maintain a variety of personal and administrative records.
Represent the Behavioral Health Department in contacts with clients, the public, community organizations, county staff, and government agencies.
Maintain cooperative relationships with families, other professional disciplines, and social agencies.
Prepare case work records, make recommendations on client progress, and coordinate care with other professionals in managed care settings.
Develop treatment plans integrating multiple clinical approaches.
Typical Qualifications
Completion of an appropriate graduate degree in psychology, social work, counseling, nursing, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
Two years of experience at a level equivalent to Sr. Behavioral Health Nurse or Behavioral Health Clinician II within Siskiyou County (one year of clinical supervision preferred).
Valid Registered Nurse License issued by the State of California, Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Registered Nursing.
Valid California license as a Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker, or Marriage and Family Therapist.
Physical & Working Conditions
Work may involve extended periods of sitting with occasional standing and walking. Requires normal manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range are necessary. Work is performed in an office environment but also includes field work and interaction with individuals exhibiting unstable or potentially violent behavior.
