Job Summary
The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC), within a research-focused environment, is responsible for the care and welfare of animals used in research. The Veterinary Health Unit ensures daily health monitoring, medical care, and research support services.

Under the supervision of the Veterinary & Technical Services Manager, the Animal Health Technician II (AHT II) supports animal health and research operations by assisting veterinarians and senior technical staff (AHT III). This role is designed as a developmental position for individuals seeking to advance in laboratory animal medicine or veterinary careers.

The AHT II performs assigned technical tasks under close supervision, contributing to animal care, research procedures, and compliance with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols. The role requires strict confidentiality and a strong commitment to animal welfare.

Key Responsibilities

Assist veterinarians and senior technicians with animal examinations and medication administration.

Perform basic health assessments and elevate findings appropriately.

Support technical procedures such as anesthesia, blood collection, and injections under supervision.

Prepare and maintain surgical, treatment, and necropsy areas, including equipment and supplies.

Assist with animal husbandry tasks as needed.

Support necropsy procedures and tissue collection.

Maintain accurate records and assist with data tracking for laboratory activities.

Perform other technical or administrative duties of similar scope.

Required Experience & Skills

Experience in clinical animal care as a Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technician.

Hands‑on experience with:
Animal handling (multiple species).

Health assessments.

Anesthesia monitoring and surgical assistance.

Intubation, injections, venipuncture, IV catheter placement.

Ability to work with a variety of laboratory animal species.

Strong attention to detail and adherence to protocols.

Ability to work effectively under supervision in a team environment.

Certifications / Licenses

None required.

Additional Information

This is a trainee‑level role intended for individuals pursuing careers in veterinary medicine, laboratory animal science, or related fields.

Emphasis is on hands‑on learning and progressive skill development.
