Job Overview
Transporters are responsible for providing and maintaining a safe environment for themselves, the patient, and their co‑workers by following established policies and procedures.

Major Responsibilities

Receive and confirm the Ticket to Ride document before transport.

Attend departmental, hospital, and Advocate education meetings.

Demonstrate knowledge of cognitive and sensory needs of pediatric and geriatric patients and provide appropriate instructions and explanations.

Contact telemetry at the time of move and completion.

Be able to perform CPR if needed.

Follow Bloodborne Pathogens, Infection Control, and Universal Precautions policies.

Wash hands thoroughly and wear PPE appropriately.

Adhere to the hospital dress code.

Use correct body‑mechanics and lifting techniques for patient transfers.

Use gait belts as required and obtain transfer assistance when necessary.

Clean soiled equipment after each use to prevent disease spread and perform thorough cleaning when required.

Use proper two‑patient identifiers to ensure patient safety.

Report safety hazards to management.

Complete work assignments efficiently to meet workload demands.

Prepare patients for transport while awaiting nursing assistance.

Report delays or cancelled tests to the dispatcher and other appropriate personnel.

Complete tasks within the time guidelines set by the automated dispatch system.

Work independently while utilizing resources for efficient operations.

Maintain communication with the dispatcher and respond to special instructions via pagers.

Assist co‑workers with lifting patients and provide any other help to ensure safe and efficient transport.

Follow oxygen usage guidelines established by the hospital.

Communicate changes in patient schedules to avoid unnecessary trips.

Report problems related to a patient’s condition to the nurse.

Provide excellent customer service by greeting patients, informing them of destinations, offering comfort measures, and directing them appropriately.

Knock on doors before entering and introduce one‑self to patients.

Refuse to allow patients to read their own charts unless a medical professional is present.

Check for DNR restrictions as part of patient safety.

Operate transport equipment safely, identify and report broken equipment, and complete related training.

Document all transport activities accurately, sign patients in and out of units, use tent cards when available, complete blood‑moves per guidelines, and document ED‑Radiology transports.

Turn in completed documents to dispatch at mid‑shift and at shift end.

Adhere to scheduled breaks and lunch periods and file incident reports for any injuries.

Respect patient confidentiality in compliance with hospital policies.

Qualifications

High school education or equivalent experience.

Prior experience interacting with a variety of age groups (children, adolescents, geriatric) is preferred.

Good communication skills and ability to anticipate patient, employee, and unit needs.

Strong customer‑service orientation.

Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Basic math skills.

Flexible, reliable, versatile, and a team player.

CPR certification required within 90 days of new‑hire orientation.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Work weekends, holidays, and varying shifts to accommodate staffing needs.

Perform lifting and transfer activities, including up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently or 20 pounds constantly.

Operate transport equipment safely and assist in evacuation during emergencies.

Perform routine tasks in potentially infectious environments and with hazardous or unpleasant conditions.

Stand and walk continuously throughout the shift, and perform pushing, pulling, stooping, bending, and twisting.

For direct patient care roles, lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; use patient‑handling equipment and a second associate for heavier lifts.

All duties may require additional related responsibilities as needed.
