
Surgical Tech First Assist

Job Summary
Provides direct patient care to infants through geriatric patients. Addresses the physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. Communicates with the surgeon continuously as needed about the patient’s condition. Assists the surgeon during operative and invasive procedures by providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs pre‑operative and post‑operative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant performs these functions during the procedure under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and applicable laws and regulations. Participates in performance‑improvement activities.
Responsibilities
Assist operating room surgeons and staff to assure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients of all ages undergoing surgical procedures.
Communicate with the surgeon continuously as needed about patient condition and assist the surgeon during operative and invasive procedures.
Assist circulator and anesthesia provider in preparing the patient and OR suite, including Foley catheter placement, tourniquet application, cricoid pressure application, gathering needed supplies/equipment, and other related tasks.
Accountably deliver quality patient care and promote a positive image of the department.
Demonstrate teamwork, adaptability, and serve as a resource to the Surgical Services team.
Qualifications
Completion of a Surgical Technologist certification program from an accredited institution and passing the Surgical Assisting Certification Exam.
Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist.
Certification as a Surgical First Assist.
Two years’ experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist.
One year of experience as a Surgical First Assist.
Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association.
