Brief Job Overview
This is a hands‑on, non‑supervisory laboratory technician position in USP’s Reference Standards Laboratory. The laboratory is responsible for maintaining laboratory operations. The incumbent will use technical expertise, organizational skills, and initiative to maintain day‑to‑day laboratory functions.
Responsibilities
Maintain laboratory consumables—including solvents, reagents, column logs, and other supplies—and manage inventory for U/HPLC, GC, and IC columns, including check‑in, disposal, and database updates; assist scientists as needed.
Oversee sample archival, sample tracking, and chemical inventory.
Calibrate equipment and instruments.
Prepare chemical solutions and reagents in collaboration with laboratory staff.
Work with USP Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to oversee laboratory waste management and disposal.
Coordinate with internal USP personnel and serve as a lab point of contact for instrument maintenance scheduling, repair, new instrument installation, and documentation.
Collaborate with USP Facilities on activities affecting the laboratory and update laboratory staff accordingly.
Conduct safety walkthroughs in RSL laboratories.
Participate in laboratory maintenance (clean‑ups) and assist with keeping the laboratory audit‑ready.
Review equipment logbooks to ensure proper documentation and order new logbooks as needed.
Submit equipment calibration and maintenance forms.
Order supplies and/or reagents.
Assist with glassware washing and organization.
Interact with laboratory staff, management, and other departments to address observations, corrections, and improvement opportunities.
Collaborate with USP employees on potential ways to improve their professional needs.
Assist with administrative tasks as needed.
Qualifications
High School diploma with 10 years of laboratory or production experience.
Associate degree with at least 6 years of laboratory or production experience.
Bachelor’s degree (specialized training or notable scientific achievements may substitute for required experience).
Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory operations, preferably in an analytical or pharmaceutical environment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Desired Preferences
Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
Personal responsibility to deliver work on time and to the highest quality.
Ability to build technical expertise in others by serving as a role model and positive influence.
Proven analytical and multi‑tasking abilities.
