Position Purpose
Ensures efficient and on-time routing system of special transportation for students who require specialized accommodations and/or equipment for travel to and from school. Collaborates and assists the Administrator and Operation Mangers in developing accurate, efficient, and safe stops, runs and routes for special education transportation using the Transportation Information Management System (TIMS).

Minimum Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

Extensive knowledge and understanding of Wake County Public School System’s (WCPSS) policies and procedures relating to general pupil transportation and special education transportation;

Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google Apps;

Strong problem-solving skills and adaptive self-starter;

Strong customer service skills;

Ability to support and exhibit WCPSS’ core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, and valuing diversity;

Ability to be a team player and role model for other employees in the organization;

Ability to organize and analyze information to identify problems and devise solutions;

Ability to read maps;

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, teachers, support staff, parents, and community members.

Education, Training, And Experience

Post-secondary coursework in computer program courses; AND

Four years of technical computer system and data entry experience; AND

School transportation experience or equivalent experience in logistics.

Certification And License Requirements

Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of North Carolina requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with TIMS and Automated Vehicle Location (AVL);

Experience in designing and implementing large scale Special Education transportation fleet routes and schedules;

Logistics experience in vehicle fleet routing and scheduling.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Utilizes the TIMS, a Geographic Information System (GIS) based computer-assisted school bus routing system, to develop special education transportation bus stops, runs, and routes.

Uses a GPS based AVL system to ensure special education transportation stops, runs, and routes are successful; conducts audits to verify efficiency success.

Works in collaboration with the Administrator and Field Operation Managers for implementation of the optimal routing system.

Reviews and processes special education transportation parent routing and stop appeals with the Administrator and Operation Manager.

Creates and keeps up to date the Routing Specialist procedures manual.

Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff and staff members of external funding agencies, and the community. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to ten pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automotive equipment.
