Job Description

MEC General Contractors is looking for a Sitework Superintendent. This role is entirely site-phase focused — you will not be asked to manage building trades. Your domain is everything from initial site mobilization through rough grading, underground utilities, paving, and site concrete, handing off a complete, inspection-ready site package to the building team. You will work directly with civil subs, self-perform crews where applicable, and the Project Manager to keep the site phase on schedule and on budget.
Responsibilities

Site mobilization — temporary facilities, erosion control, access roads, fencing, and safety setup before any work begins
Mass grading and fine grading operations, including cut/fill sequencing, compaction testing coordination, and subgrade prep
Underground utility installation: sanitary sewer, storm drainage, water mains, fire lines, and dry utilities — coordinating with inspectors and utility owners throughout
Stormwater management and SWPPP compliance — maintaining BMPs, conducting site inspections, and keeping the site in compliance throughout construction
Coordinating survey, layout, and grade checks with the site survey crew to ensure work is built to plan
Site concrete: curb and gutter, sidewalks, pads, and flatwork — managing placement, finishing, and curing to spec
Subbase preparation, paving operations, and asphalt coordination through final lift
Managing civil subcontractors and equipment operators day-to-day — directing work, tracking production, and holding trade foremen accountable
Daily logs with manpower counts, equipment on site, work performed, weather, and inspection results
Coordinating city/county inspections for underground utility phases and obtaining all required sign-offs before backfill
Tracking material deliveries — pipe, stone, concrete, geotextile — and managing laydown areas to keep the site moving efficiently
Handing off a clean, complete site to the building superintendent: final grades confirmed, utilities accepted, paving complete, as-builts initiated
Qualifications & Skills

10+ years running sitework on commercial construction projects — not residential grading, not highway work, but commercial site packages from mobilization through paving
Direct experience managing earthwork contractors, utility subs, and equipment operators simultaneously on active sites
Track record of getting underground utility phases inspected and accepted on schedule — you know what inspectors look for and you don't bury pipe that isn't ready
Experience reading civil construction drawings, grading plans, utility profiles, and paving sections — and catching conflicts in the office before they show up in the field
Proficient in Procore for daily logs, photo documentation, and inspection tracking
Preferred:

experience on commercial retail, restaurant, or multi-building campus site packages in Florida or the Southeast. Familiarity with FDEP permit conditions and SJRWMD/SWFWMD compliance is a plus.
Technical knowledge

Solid understanding of earthwork means and methods: cut/fill balance, compaction requirements, lift thicknesses, and moisture conditioning
Working knowledge of gravity flow drainage systems — pipe sizing, invert elevations, manhole installation, and outfall requirements
Familiarity with pressure systems: water main installation, thrust blocking, pressure testing, and bacteriological clearance procedures
Understanding of FDOT and local agency paving specifications, base course requirements, and asphalt compaction standards
SWPPP compliance experience — maintaining inspection logs, correcting deficiencies, and managing erosion control through site phases
Ability to use a grade rod and work alongside survey crews; comfortable verifying grades in the field against plan elevations
Safety & compliance

OSHA 30 required; Trenching and Excavation Competent Person certification strongly preferred
Experience managing confined space entry protocols for manhole and vault work
Familiar with one-call (811) procedures, utility locate requirements, and safe excavation practices near existing utilities
