As an Equipment Operator with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, you play a vital role in ensuring the safety and reliability of our roadways year-round. Your work is especially critical during the winter season, when snow removal keeps communities moving and protects the traveling public. Beyond winter operations, you contribute to a wide range of construction and maintenance projects that support infrastructure quality across the region. This position requires physical stamina, technical skill, and a strong commitment to teamwork. Each day offers the opportunity to operate heavy equipment, maintain essential machinery, and make a meaningful impact on the safety and quality of life for residents throughout the area.
Primary Duties- Operate a variety of heavy equipment for snow removal, construction, and roadway maintenance activities.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and machinery to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Participate in physically demanding tasks that support infrastructure upkeep and public safety.
- Maintain accurate daily logs and reports documenting equipment usage, maintenance actions, and operational activities.
- Assist with construction and maintenance projects that enhance roadway conditions and support long-term infrastructure reliability.
- Work collaboratively with team members to complete assignments safely, efficiently, and in accordance with departmental standards.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment.
- Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Summer hours: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $44,988.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed or equivalent.
- All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
- All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
- Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
- All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
