OVERALL PURPOSE
The job of the High School Healthcare Science Teacher is to provide standards-based instruction aligned to Georgia CTAE Healthcare Science pathway standards that prepares students for careers in the healthcare field; develop students’ knowledge and skills in health science, patient care, and medical practices; support career readiness through hands-on learning and real-world applications; assess and monitor student progress; maintain a safe and supportive learning environment; and ensure compliance with federal, state, and district policies and expectations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
A valid Georgia Educator Certificate in the assigned teaching field as required by the Professional Standards Commission
Experience
Work experience in a healthcare-related field is preferred, as required for CTAE certification pathways.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Knowledge of Georgia CTAE Healthcare Science pathway standards and industry expectations.
Knowledge of healthcare systems, medical terminology, patient care, and safety procedures.
Knowledge of sports medicine concepts, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation.
Knowledge of Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), including HOSA, and their role in student leadership development.
Ability to provide hands-on, skills-based instruction in a clinical or simulated setting.
Ability to supervise students in lab and/or clinical environments and ensure safety compliance.
Ability to integrate career readiness skills, including professionalism, communication, and teamwork.
Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including English Learners and gifted students.
Ability to analyze student data and adjust instruction accordingly.
Strong classroom management, organization, and communication skills.
Ability to build and maintain partnerships with healthcare providers, athletic staff, and community organizations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES
Delivers standards-based instruction aligned to Georgia CTAE Healthcare Science pathway standards.
Provides instruction in healthcare concepts, including medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, patient care, infection control, and safety practices.
Engages students in hands-on learning experiences, simulations, and lab-based instruction aligned to industry standards.
Prepares students for healthcare certifications, clinical experiences, and postsecondary opportunities in health-related fields.
Supervises students in laboratory and/or clinical settings, ensuring adherence to safety, confidentiality (HIPAA), and ethical standards.
Integrates employability skills, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and professionalism.
Coordinates or supports work-based learning opportunities, internships, job shadowing, and partnerships with healthcare organizations, as applicable.
Advises and supports the HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) student organization, including maintaining and growing co-curricular activities, facilitating student leadership development, and preparing students for competitive events and participation.
Uses formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and guide instruction.
Analyzes student data to develop and adjust instructional strategies and interventions.
Differentiates instruction to support diverse learners, including English Learners and gifted students.
Implements appropriate instructional strategies, accommodations, and extensions aligned to ESOL and gifted best practices, as applicable.
Incorporates technology and industry tools to enhance instruction and student learning.
Maintains an effective and safe classroom/lab environment that supports student engagement and learning.
Maintains inventory, equipment, and materials necessary for healthcare instruction and lab activities.
Compiles, maintains, and submits required reports and documentation in a timely manner, including CTAE compliance documentation.
Maintains appropriate student behavior in accordance with district expectations.
Follows professional practices consistent with school and system policies in working with students, student records, parents, and colleagues.
Adheres to the Code of Ethics for Educators in Georgia.
Participates in professional learning and maintains current knowledge of healthcare practices and industry standards.
Follows work scheduling and attendance requirements in a regular, predictable, and punctual manner.
Ensures adherence to appropriate safety procedures.
Follows federal and state laws, including OSHA and HIPAA guidelines, as well as Board policies and district procedures.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, as well as some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 40% walking, and 30% standing.
CONTINUING EDUCATION/TRAINING
Maintains all required licenses and certifications.
EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Teacher Keys Effectiveness System.(TKES)
