The Role
The Legal Division is seeking an attorney to join our Finance and Corporate Legal team to work at the intersection of tax-exempt governance, corporate engagement and political law. This role offers the opportunity to advise on some of the firm’s most visible activities and programs and interact with the directors and senior officers of our affiliated philanthropic tax-exempt entities. In this role, you will provide strategic legal advice on issues affecting the firm, The Goldman Sachs Foundation, Goldman Sachs Gives and our external donor advised fund. You will work closely with stakeholders across Legal, Compliance, the Office of Corporate Engagement, the Office of Government and Regulatory Affairs and business teams to manage risk while facilitating the firm’s responsible engagement with the public sector and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Support the legal oversight of Goldman Sachs-affiliated charitable entities and corporate engagement initiatives, including our flagship 10,000 Small Businesses and 10,000 Women initiatives.
Counsel on tax‑exempt organization matters, including governance, private foundation and donor advised fund rules, self‑dealing, private benefit and political activity restrictions.
Negotiate and prepare vendor/consultant contracts and grant agreements related to our corporate engagement initiatives.
Advise on federal, state and local pay‑to‑play, campaign finance, lobbying and placement agent rules.
Review and advise on gifts, meals, events and other government ethics considerations involving public officials.
Monitor legal developments and proactively assess emerging risks impacting the political law space and tax‑exempt operations.
Qualifications
J.D. and admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
Three to seven years of experience practicing law.
Strong working knowledge of tax‑exempt organization law, with particular focus on advising private foundations and donor advised funds.
Significant experience in political law, including pay‑to‑play, lobbying and campaign finance matters.
Excellent judgment and the ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical guidance for business partners.
Experience working with multiple stakeholders and interacting with senior management in a fast‑paced, highly regulated environment.
Salary Range
The expected base salary for this New York, New York, United States-based position is $170,000-$270,000. In addition, you may be eligible for a discretionary bonus if you are an active employee as of fiscal year-end.
