Purpose and Scope
The Police Officer utilizes a specialized skill set in performing assigned duties and tasks. Responsible for general security of students and employees. Patrols campus grounds and buildings; directs traffic on campus; investigates offenses, accidents, and incidents; prepares written reports; makes arrests as necessary and assists the public. Has a valid TCOLE license and carries a firearm at all times while on duty.
Essential Job Functions
Patrols campus grounds and buildings, checking doors, windows, and gates to ensure that they are properly secured
Investigates all offenses and incidents
Makes court appearances
Writes a thorough and accurate report on every criminal complaint, accident, or other significant incident
Provides assistance to all students, faculty, and visitors, and responds to calls for first aid and medical assistance
Applies acquired expanded skills related to analytical, technical, or operational process
Applies experience and skills to complete assigned work within own area of expertise
Works within clearly defined standard operating procedures and adheres to quality guidelines
Works under a moderate degree of supervision
Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Microsoft Office and the use of software programs designed for police department use
Remote access systems may be required
Proficiency in the use of firearms
Ability to communicate well
Ability to work under pressure, remain calm in emergency situations, and skilled in conflict resolution
Physical Abilities
Subject to extended periods of intense concentration in review of crime scenes, investigations, and preparing law enforcement reports
Ability to drive a patrol vehicle
Subject to physical harm such as weapons and physical attacks
Vision (Near, Distance, Color, Peripheral, and Depth Perception); ability to detect movement and activity in very low light
Stand for lengthy periods and perform strenuous physical exertion including bending, stooping, running, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling
Carry moderately heavy items as needed; work outdoors with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures
Fine motor skills and dexterity to operate equipment used in the position
May be required to physically restrain persons
Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and discern spoken instructions
Ability to extend hands and arms in any direction
Spoken communication that conveys detailed or important instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly
Close visual acuity to perform data collection and reporting
Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, including long distances or between sites
Working Schedule and Conditions
Equipment includes PC workstation in a LAN, calculator, phone, and general office tools; standard police equipment as per departmental policies
Interface with internal and external contacts as needed
Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to extreme weather; exposure to potentially dangerous situations and use of firearms; weekend duty and shift work
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Basic TCOLE peace officer license
Valid Texas Driver's License with driving record meeting the System criteria
Successfully complete a physical agility assessment (rowing 500 meters in
Qualify with department-issued sidearm on the department’s standard sidearm qualification course
Upon hire, pass Lone Star College Police Department's field training program
Preferred Qualifications
60 earned college hours or Intermediate Peace Officer Certification from TCOLE
At least 4 years United States Military service with honorable discharge
Salary and Benefits
Hiring salary range is $51,761 - $59,526. Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Salary offers are determined by related experience and education. The resume submitted in the application process will be used to calculate the starting salary.
