Position Overview

Carilion Clinic is seeking motivated and highly driven Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants) for our Orthopaedic APP Fellowship Program. This structured fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive training in orthopaedic surgery, equipping APPs with advanced clinical knowledge, procedural skills, and operative experience within a collaborative academic health system.
Program Highlights

Structured didactic curriculum and case‑based learning
Hands‑on operative and clinical training alongside orthopaedic surgeons
Exposure to subspecialties including sports medicine, joint reconstruction, trauma, spine, and hand
Mentorship from experienced orthopaedic faculty and APP leaders
Inpatient and outpatient clinical experience
Emphasis on evidence‑based practice and team‑based care
Responsibilities

Participate in outpatient clinics, inpatient consults, and perioperative care
Assist in surgical procedures and develop procedural competency
Manage pre‑ and post‑operative patient care
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes
Engage in educational conferences and quality improvement initiatives
Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program
Board certified/board eligible (PA‑C, FNP, AGACNP, etc.)
Eligible for Virginia licensure
Strong interest in orthopaedics and surgical practice
Excellent communication and teamwork skills

What We Require:

Education:

Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner Program or Accredited Physician Assistant Program.
Experience:

Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/department preferred.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration:

Current Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license required. DEA licensure required. Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.
Other Minimum Qualifications:

Demonstrates knowledge and competency of core skills related to assigned area that serves as a basis for continued growth and progression of skills and pace. Demonstrates good written and oral communication skills. Computer literacy required for automated computer systems and programs such as electronic medical records.
