In this pivotal role, you will provide expert supervision and technical direction for the maintenance, repair, and operation of critical city infrastructure. You will lead skilled teams, manage complex projects, and ensure all operations adhere to strict safety and regulatory standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans, organizes, coordinates and reviews the work of construction and maintenance crews involving street, sewer and storm drain maintenance, street sweeping, striping and sign painting, and repair activities such as cleaning, repairing and maintaining streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveway approaches, traffic signs, traffic signals, street lighting, public parking lots, sewer mains, manholes, appurtenances, storm drains and drainage channels in public streets, alleys and easements.
Plans, organizes, coordinates and reviews the work of construction and maintenance crews in various City buildings, building systems, structures, and other related facilities.
Schedules street sweeping and pick‑up of debris.
Receives, investigates and takes remedial action on complaints regarding activities of work crews.
Conducts inspections to evaluate work progress, methods and quality; collects data to prepare estimates, determine workload, personnel and equipment requirements for projects, and to forecast future operational needs.
Supervises, trains and evaluates the work of subordinate personnel; instructs personnel in work methods and safety practices.
Assures adherence to safety standards and proper use of safety equipment.
Supervises and participates in the completion of time, material and equipment use records.
Explains policy to the general public.
Checks streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveway approaches, traffic signs and painting, public parking lots, sewer mains, manholes, appurtenances, storm drains, drainage channels for needed maintenance and repairs.
Checks City buildings, building systems, structures, and other related facilities for needed maintenance and repairs.
Assists in preparing reports and annual budget estimates; prepares sketches outlining work needed for minor street maintenance and repair work.
KNOWLEDGE OF
Methods, materials and equipment used in street, traffic signal and related systems, sewer and storm drain construction, maintenance and repair.
Methods, materials and equipment used in building construction, maintenance and repair.
Traffic and sign painting methods and procedures.
Principles and techniques of supervision and employee training.
Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.
Basic principles and practices of public works engineering as they relate to street, traffic systems, sewer and storm drain maintenance and repair.
Recordkeeping procedures.
Safe work practices.
Ability to plan, assign and direct the activities of subordinate employees.
Direct and inspect the technical details of street, traffic systems, sewer and storm drain maintenance work.
ABILITY TO
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
Interpret and work from sketches, penciled layouts and working plans and specifications.
Prepare required reports and maintain records; follow oral and written directions.
Keep accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with subordinate employees and members of the general public.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
EXPERIENCE
– At least four years of experience in public works construction and/or maintenance work, including at least 18 months as Lead Worker for the City of Lynwood.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record.
Subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program.
PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily duties; requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer keyboard; requires near and far vision in reading written reports, plans, drawings, and work‑related documents; acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service.
