Overview

Performs technical (non-judgmental) functions of drug preparation, drug distribution and drug charge control of inpatients, outpatients and associates in accordance with established standards set forth by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Familiar with essential functions relating to drug purchasing and inventory control and the usual technician functions associated with institutional drug distribution systems. Maintains that all medications and supplies are in-date and stored per the manufacturer’s recommendations in a clean and orderly manner. Assists the Pharmacist in ordering and receiving all IV fluids and supplies from Materials Management. Completes and documents all cleanings of the IV suite and hoods per USP 797 Guidelines and institution’s policies. Familiar with essential technician functions associated with dispensing prescriptions for associates. Strictly complies with all HIPAA laws and guidelines. All other duties as outlined and/or allowed by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy. Strictly abides by the legal requirement that all dispensing and/or compounding of medications by a Pharmacy Technician must be checked by a Pharmacist.
Responsibilities

Maintain that medications and supplies are in-date and stored per manufacturer recommendations.
Assist the Pharmacist in ordering, receiving, and inventory management of IV fluids and supplies.
Perform cleaning and sanitation of the IV suite and hoods in accordance with USP 797 and institutional policies.
Dispense and compound medications for associates in accordance with applicable laws and standards, with pharmacist check.
Maintain drug distribution systems and charge control inpatients and outpatients as directed.
Qualifications

Education: A high school education, equivalent, or advanced training with competency in basic mathematical skills and use of the metric system. Arkansas Pharmacy Technician Licensure is required. The associate must be licensed and meet all requirements set forth by the State Health Department and the State Board of Pharmacy.
Training and Experience: Pharmacy technician experiences are preferred. Must have mathematical proficiency to accurately complete dosage calculations, with computer skills and basic record keeping abilities.
Job Knowledge: Knowledge of the healthcare institution and its pharmacy department, ethics standards governing pharmacy practice, drug dosages, administration rules, dosage forms, packaging and labeling procedures, aseptic compounding and parenteral admixture operations, and pharmaceutical terminology and abbreviations used in prescribing, dispensing and charting medications.

Physical and Mental Effort

Physical: Maintains good physical well-being. Job responsibilities require some lifting up to forty pounds, walking, standing, bending, and pushing of carts.
Mental: Requires good mental well-being. Significant concentration and attention to detail; ability to check own work and adjust speed as needed. Subject to interruptions by nursing personnel, pharmacists and other technical personnel.
