This position provides operational and supervisory oversight of multi‑disciplinary clinical services staff working within the Department of Corrections. It is an Administrative Supervisor with direct field influence and accountability on all aspects of medical, dental, and behavioral health.
What You Will Do
Ensure operational and administrative compliance with laws, rules, regulations, standards, state licensing/credentialing, etc. affecting the provision of nursing, medical, dental, and mental health services to offenders.
Preserve offenders’ right to legally mandated healthcare by ensuring appropriate and cost‑effective utilization of medical resources and personnel.
Establish systems for the coordination of care among multi‑disciplinary health care providers.
Protect the general public and ensure the safety of staff and offender rights to healthcare services.
Provide nursing care to offenders such as medication administration and emergency assessments during times of emergency.
Supervise, coach, and mentor all disciplines of staff by developing performance plans, conducting performance reviews, and completing performance evaluations per SD DOC regulations, and resolve complaints/grievances at the administrative level.
Ensure staff compliance with the offender grievance process, offender co‑pay, electronic data entry, and information systems requirements.
Notify the Chief Medical Officer and Chief of Clinical Operations of all medical sentinel events, reportable incidents, deaths, and health outbreaks.
Maintain continuing quality improvement (CQI) plans and processes with accurate and timely reporting.
Foster an environment of cohesiveness while managing a multidisciplinary operation.
Incorporate strong team‑building strategies to promote partnerships and collaboration with institutional staff.
Meet routinely with supervisors to ensure understanding of each discipline’s operations.
Attend senior management team meetings at the institution and contribute to operations management of the facility with a clinical component.
Qualifications
Applicant must possess a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
Applicant must have five (5) years of professional experience providing direct patient care.
Applicant must have two (2) years of nursing supervisory experience, including coaching, mentoring, performance management, scheduling, and leave approval.

Knowledge of regulatory compliance, standards, procedures, laws, rules, and statutes.
Proficiency reading and comprehending the English language; ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Management, Health Management and Policy, Health Services Administration, or Hospital Administration.
Experience providing operational oversight of a multi‑disciplinary health‑care program in a correctional environment.
Experience supervising medical and behavioral health staff.
Fiscal and budgetary experience.
Nursing experience in a correctional setting.
Conditions Of Employment
The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen and the candidate’s ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Additional Requirements
Individuals selected for the position may carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, staff must complete the training program, a written and practical self‑defense exam, and CPR to AHA guidelines.
All new employees must pass TB screening upon hire.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act and eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
