Position
The Opportunity
We are pursuing qualified candidates to fill Clinical Licensed Vocational Nurse I positions within the Department of Mental Health. The position provides nursing assistance to physicians in a community health or hospital clinic or a Probation Department dispensary or infirmary.
About This Position
Positions allocable to this class are responsible for providing assistance to physicians conducting diagnostic physical examinations and performing medical treatments by readying patients and examining rooms, making vital sign observations, administering ordered medications and treatments, and reinforcing the physicians' instructions to the patients. Work requires nursing principles and techniques normally acquired through vocational nurse training. Work is performed under the direction of a physician or the immediate supervision of a registered nurse and follows their specific instructions and the established nursing procedures for the particular clinic, dispensary, or infirmary. Assignments are made to one or more clinics for screening, specific diseases, or a variety of illnesses; or to a dispensary or infirmary providing treatment for minor illnesses.
Essential Job Functions
Reviews patient's records to determine the purpose of the visit and whether patient charts, x-rays, or lab results are ready.
Interviews patient or family to obtain medical history and records it on appropriate forms.
Sets up the area for the physician by arranging supplies, equipment, and patient charts, x-ray, and lab results.
Observes patients to determine condition and need for immediate referral to physician.
Takes vital signs: blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration.
Prepares the patient for examination and treatment; transfers, positions, and drapes the patient; hands instruments to the physician during procedures.
Administers medications and immunizations as ordered (orally and by intramuscular/subcutaneous injections).
Provides patient education on medications, procedures, side effects, and aftercare as ordered by the physician.
Performs treatments under physician direction (e.g., suture removal, wound dressings, fitting hosiery).
Conducts visual examinations (e.g., screening school children for communicable diseases) and completes school readmission slips when appropriate.
Answers telephone inquiries about clinic services and handles appointment scheduling.
Administers Mantoux or atypical mycobacteria skin tests and records results.
Collects and labels specimens and orders nursing supplies as needed.
Requirements
Selection Requirements
A license to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. Applicants must meet this requirement at the time of filing to be appointed to vacancies related to this recruitment.
License(s) Required
A copy of a valid and unrestricted Vocational Nurse license must be attached to the application at filing or emailed within seven (7) calendar days of submission. Original license must be presented at the time of appointment.
Other requirements include a valid California Class C Driver License or ability to use an alternative method of transportation to perform job-related functions.
Physical Class
Physical Class III – Moderate: standing or walking most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching; occasional lifting over 25 pounds; frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Desirable Qualification
Proven experience related to the desirable qualification will be recognized positively. Experience working in shelters or street encampments assisting people experiencing homelessness or with vulnerable populations to provide direct care, referrals, and linkage to services or mental health resources as a licensed Vocational Nurse.
