Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)

Overview
The ARC (Animal Recovery Center) facility is dedicated to the recovery and rehabilitation of victims of cruelty and neglect admitted through the NYPD Partnership program and the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and Community Engagement (CE) programs.

Our staff of more than 45 sheltering, medical, and animal behavior professionals works closely with the ASPCA Animal Hospital, Forensics, Legal Advocacy and Investigations, Behavioral Sciences, Shelter Medicine Services, Community Engagement, Placement, and the Adoption Center teams to provide coordinated, holistic care for the animals we serve.

Responsibilities
Nursing and Shelter Population Care (50%)

Possess in-depth knowledge of veterinary medical concepts.

Care for up to 40 cats and dogs per day, providing compassionate care using Fear Free/Low Stress handling.

Perform technical nursing skills including venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic imaging, critical care, pharmacology, and dentistry.

Use critical thinking and multitasking skills to prioritize care based on hospital, ARC, and newest case needs.

Maintain and comply with infectious disease prevention procedures.

Administer injections, vaccinations, medications, and treatments as directed by standard operating procedures and the attending Veterinarian.

Run diagnostic tests and administer fluids when needed.

Maintain weekly medical‑supplies inventory, ensuring all items are in‑date and functional.

Report any non‑functional equipment to the appropriate team for repair.

Keep logs, inventory, DTM plates, patient records, and checklists current and accurate.

Create and manage treatment sheets, surgery and procedure requests, and medication orders.

Stay current on emergency drugs and protocols.

Communicate animals’ conditions accurately to the direct care team.

Support the Medical Supervisor and veterinarians in humane euthanasia planning and execution.

Team, Administrative, Training (30%)

Remain open to new protocols and willing to learn, implement, and train others.

Lead onboarding and training for new hires.

Remain composed amid fast‑paced, changing priorities.

Work independently and as part of a cooperative team.

Provide medical information and represent the ARC to other ASPCA departments.

Communicate all relevant patient information to ARC management and veterinarians.

Deliver thorough, detailed updates—including behavior and operational data—to incoming LVTs.

Keep veterinarians and the behavior, management, and medical teams informed of all medical and safety issues.

Follow OSHA protocols and departmental standard operating procedures.

Adhere to behavior sedation procedures and immediately communicate any necessary deviations.

Attend daily shift rounds, monthly staff meetings, and scheduled training sessions.

Present or train new and existing staff as directed.

Delegate appropriate tasks to the direct care team.

Communicate professionally and effectively with the public and all ASPCA staff.

Perform other administrative duties as required.

Housekeeping and Maintenance (20%)

Clean and disinfect kennels, transport carriers, equipment, and facility areas while using appropriate PPE.

Follow all PPE and cleaning protocols.

Take inventory and stock supplies as needed.

Assist in maintaining supply levels, noting low inventory in all areas.

Maintain the ARC, including exam rooms, common areas, playrooms, and kennels, clean and organized throughout the day; direct any needed assistance.

Qualifications

Successfully work in a high‑volume, fast‑paced environment combining emergency and shelter medicine.

Handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work under high stress with changing priorities.

Exhibit excellent low‑stress animal handling skills.

Communicate effectively and courteously with all staff levels.

Maintain an open mind regarding changes and willingness to learn and teach new protocols.

Keep strict confidentiality when dealing with criminal cases.

Comfortable working with behaviorally and medically compromised animals; experience with humane euthanasia acceptable.

Obtain continuing education required by the ASPCA and state licensing board.

Deploy locally or nationally at least once per year.

Demonstrate dependable, reliable attendance.

Willingness to adjust schedule if operations require.

Walk, bend, stand, and reach consistently throughout an 8‑hour day; lift up to 50 lbs.

Safely walk and handle dogs weighing 100 lbs. or more, including stairs.

Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.

Compensation and Benefits
Starting pay will vary based on education, experience, location, and other factors. The target hiring range for new hires is $34.60 to $37.00. Performance could result in compensation above the maximum range. A signing bonus is also available.

Education & Work Experience: Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology (Required). 1‑3 years of veterinary hospital and/or shelter experience preferred.
