
Integrated Care Assistant (Animal Care)

Summary
If you are passionate about delivering high-quality care for animals who have been victims of cruelty and neglect, and you thrive in a fast-paced, team environment, the position of Integrated Care Assistant (ICA) at the Animal Recovery Center may be for you. The ARC recovers and rehabilitates animals admitted through NYPD and ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and Community Engagement (CE) programs. This facility is dedicated to recovering and rehabilitating dogs and cats who have suffered physical and emotional trauma and delivering medical and behavioral interventions to prepare them for adoption or return to the owner when appropriate. AICAs provide medical treatments and behavioral enrichment during all animal care activities and support the behavioral and medical recovery of animals. They detect potential problems, communicate with clinical professionals, administer medications, provide daily care, engage in enrichment activities, and document all activities.
Responsibilities
Engage in behavioral and enrichment activities following enrichment program protocols and recommend animal‑specific changes to the regimen.
Assist in behavioral health evaluations, assessments, trainings, and other animal interventions.
Exercise and socialize animals, manage playgroups, observe and report reactions, encourage healthy behaviors, and reward animals appropriately.
Feed animals, provide clean water, maintain a clean environment, and detect, log, and report irregularities in nutrition, hydration, or behaviors.
Monitor shelter animals for signs of distress, anxiety, or physical ailments, ensuring a safe environment and clean enclosures.
Provide safe and smooth fear‑free handling of animals.
Monitor animal holding areas for appropriate music or auditory stimulation and report observations.
Attend to the welfare of animals by following all ASPCA protocols and kennel signage.
Read and follow all kennel signage and treatment sheets regarding animal treatment and care.
Administer medications and medical treatments under the guidance of the ARC medical team following protocol.
Recognize potential medical issues and communicate effectively with medical teams.
Send timely medical and behavior observation reports and actively engage with the team to implement interventions.
Work in partnership with other teams to continually develop knowledge and support continuity of care.
Collaborate with other ICAs and attend daily ICA rounds to support continuity of care.
Integrate volunteers into daily care, providing guidance and coaching as needed.
Transport animals using low‑stress handling techniques between ASPCA facilities and partner agencies.
Attend and participate in team meetings and training classes as scheduled.
Deploy locally or nationally as part of an ASPCA response once per year.

Compensation and Benefits

Previous experience in detecting common medical ailments and administering topical and oral medications
Previous experience with sheltering software systems and record keeping, including medical records
Previous experience working in behavior training facility or in a shelter and/or veterinary setting with compromised animals
