Purpose
The job of Licensed Practical Nurse is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the educational process.

Essential Functions

Administers emergency first aid and scheduled medication to students under the direction of a healthcare professional (e.g. nausea, shortness of breath, seizures, dizziness, headaches, sprains, etc.) for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs.

Advises assigned administrator of observations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.

Attends meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of gathering information required to perform functions.

Completes health screenings (e.g. lice, vision, hearing, dental, scoliosis, height/weight, migrant children’s screening, sports physicals, pediatric diabetes care plans, etc.) for the purpose of identifying health concerns and/or delivering school health services in compliance with established guidelines.

Issues health alerts under the guidance of the supervisor for the purpose of providing necessary health information to personnel and parents.

Maintains inventory of medications and office supplies to ensure items availability as needed.

Maintains student health informational records (e.g. prescription dispensing log, medical emergency cards, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by regulatory requirements and state compliance.

Monitors students referred to the health room to ensure their safety and/or refer to a medical professional for review and services.

Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. data entry of medical alert status, immunization records, withdrawing students, daily medication task list, input of new student immunizations, input of vitals and assessment health notes, state reports, etc.) to support health services activities and processes to maintain compliance.

Refers students requiring further medical attention (e.g. pregnancy, etc.) for the purpose of providing information on available follow-up treatment and services.

Reports incidents (e.g. suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain personal safety of students, provide a positive learning environment and adhere to Education Code and school policies.

Supports the implementation of individualized health plans for students as needed (e.g. toileting) for the purpose of assisting the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills : administer first aid/CPR; handle body fluids and waste materials; operate standard office equipment and pertinent software applications; prepare and maintain accurate records.

Knowledge : basic math (including fractions, percents, ratios); read a variety of manuals; write documents following prescribed formats; present information to others; analyze situations to define issues; understand emergency first aid/CPR procedures; safety practices and procedures; health standards; reporting procedures.

Abilities : schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; use basic job‑related equipment; work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data using defined processes; operate equipment using defined methods; work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; adapt to changing priorities; maintain confidentiality; be sensitive to and communicate with young adults/teenagers regarding a variety of health needs; be attentive to detail; display tact and courtesy; solve problems by identifying issues and creating action plans.

Responsible for work under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; provide information and/or advise others; operate within a defined budget; utilize resources from other work units when required; continuous opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Experience : Job related experience is required.

Education : High school diploma or equivalent.

Certificates and Licenses : CPR/First Aid Certificate; maintain certificates and/or licenses such as Criminal Background Clearance/Fingerprint Clearance; MMR.

Work Environment : Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, significant fine finger dexterity, 40% sitting, 40% walking, 20% standing, and exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
