Job Summary
The OR Circulating Nurse is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team of licensed and unlicensed caregivers who ensure that patients, families, and significant others receive individualized high quality, safe patient care. They practice in a clinical environment administered by Nurse Managers and other leaders and are supported through the WellStar Shared Governance Model. The framework for practice is steered by the WellStar Professional Practice Model, 5-Star Nursing, and evidence-based practice and research. RN competencies are derived from these models and supported by the WellStar Core Competencies. It is expected that all RN Clinical Nurses are licensed, knowledgeable, and uphold the practice of nursing as outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, implementing the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics Standards put forth by the American Nurses Association. As a member of the patient services team, each individual upholds the voice of the patient, system policies and procedures while supporting service excellence goals.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Exemplary Practice and Outcomes
Perform the Nursing Process (assessment, diagnosis, identification of outcomes, planning, implementation, and evaluation) using evidence-based practice, analytical and critical thinking, ensuring individualized care and coordinating care through effective partnerships.
Provide relationship-based patient-centered care consistent with population specific characteristics (age, gender, disease, etc.) and adapt service delivery to reflect an understanding of cultural diversity.
Always partner with the patient and significant others using appropriate methods for setting and purpose (bedside shift report, interdisciplinary rounds, just-in-time and planned patient teaching), keeping the patient and significant others updated and making the patient’s goals the focus of the plan of care.
Practice using current clinical practice standards.
Teamwork and Collaboration (55%)
Coordinate delivery and documentation of safe quality patient care promoting the professional care delivery model, including diverse and inclusive interdisciplinary communication methods.
Demonstrate teamwork and collaboration in a fiscally responsible manner and promote recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members.
Participate and support performance improvement, research utilization, and shared governance at all levels.
Professional Development and Initiative (25%)
Complete all initial and ongoing professional competency assessments, mandatory education, and population specific education.
Serve as a preceptor or mentor for other professional nurses and staff or students of all disciplines, modeling the professional practice of nursing and creating a healthy work environment.
Evidence Based Practice and Research (10%)
Promote evidence-based practice, nursing research, and performance improvement.
Uphold all health care system and organizational policies and procedures and clinical competencies, including legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
Participate in data collection, pose relevant clinical questions, consult appropriate experts, and use appropriate resources and evidence to address practice questions.
Resources and Support (5%)
Proactively plan for patient care across the continuum during direct patient care.
Participate in development of protocols and procedures to achieve best practice outcomes.
Support efficient and effective use of human and material resources.
Required Minimum Education
A diploma from an accredited nursing program (Graduate of an accredited/approved school of nursing) – required.
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing – preferred.
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)
Registered Nurse (Single State) or RN – Multi-state Compact.
Basic Life Support or BLS – Instructor.
Required Minimum Experience
Experience circulating in the O.R. – required.
Minimum 1–2 years of direct patient care experience.
Required Minimum Skills
Ability to read, write, and speak English.
Optimize the use of technology to support clinical care and hold basic computer skills.
Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and customer service skills.
Ability to function in a fast‑paced environment and respond to emergencies in a decisive, composed, and respectful manner.
Excellent time management skills and strong critical thinking skills.
