HSCS is comprised of nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state supported living centers. The psychiatric hospitals offer state‑of‑the‑art, recovery‑oriented, science‑based treatment to forensic mental health and complex psychiatric patients. This position welcomes compassionate, innovative, and individualized caregivers.
Essential Job Functions
The Rehab Therapy Tech IV performs highly complex rehabilitative therapy work. Responsibilities include assisting in the development, implementation, and execution of a planned and assigned program of rehabilitative therapy, guiding other staff, and training new rehabilitation staff. The position works under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Performs additional duties as assigned, which may include active participation in disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations activation. This may require alternate shift patterns or location changes.
May be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on maximum security locations.
Attends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule, rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy. Assists in screening, interviewing, onboarding qualified Rehabilitation Technicians, and provides instructional guidance to patients in therapeutic activities such as games, recreation, fitness, swimming, sports, crafts, and team building.
Provides instruction to patients in self‑care, independent living, and character building. Maintains relationships with local colleges and community resources to schedule visits and guest speakers. Observes and documents patient behavior and level of participation. Develops knowledge of patient needs and implements therapeutic activities and workshops. Operates a state vehicle and ensures travel logistics and safety compliance.
Attends meetings, completes special projects, and participates in case formulations and inter‑unit collaboration. Ensures equipment and supplies are maintained, inventoried, and replaced. Researches and develops new curriculum, coordinates programming approvals, and documents updates in recovery plans. Maintains cleanliness and safety of therapeutic facilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of rehabilitation techniques and mental illness and disabilities. Knowledge of regulations, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of supervising and overseeing the work of others. Skills in using computer hardware and software, equipment, tools, and materials used in therapeutic service activities. Ability to use necessary equipment for rehabilitation activities. Ability to evaluate patient participation and document progress. Ability to interact effectively with patients, families, and staff. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to instruct and train others.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications
Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire. Must be a certified CPR provider. Certified Rehab Therapy Technician (PTA) or obtain within one year.
Initial Screening Criteria
Two years’ experience working with people who have mental illness or intellectual and developmental disabilities. Two years’ experience in the development of treatment and support plans for people with mental illness or intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.
Additional Requirements
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between 18‑25 must register with the Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age; Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age. Flexibility in work hours, overtime, and extended hours may be required. Compliance with HHSC immunization policy is required. Employees must be vaccinated against hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and influenza; unvaccinated employees may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
