Public Service Trainee
Performs routine unskilled and limited semi-skilled manual labor, in the construction and/or maintenance of water and sewer lines, meter repair, grounds and maintenance, water/sewer installations, and cross connections. Performs a variety of indoor/outdoor tasks, using some small hand-operated power tools and mechanical equipment. May operate trucks and other equipment to transport personnel and tools to and from work sites, and to load, unload, and move materials. (The use of an iPad, or other electronic devices, may be required.)

Verifiable GED or High School Diploma Required- NO EXCEPTIONS
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK:
Ability to perform heavy manual tasks; ability to understand and follow simple written or oral directions; physical strength and stamina; communicates clearly; treats others with professionalism and respect. Must be able to read and write and have some experience in heavy manual labor work; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
THE PUBLIC SERVICE TRAINEE PROCESS
Step 1: Public Service Trainee must work a total 1,040 hours or more before applying for permanent classified employment under the Mobile County Personnel Board.
Step 2: Once the Public Service Trainee has worked 1040 hours successfully within 6-7 months, the Public Service Trainee will be eligible to apply for promotion to Public Service Worker I, which is a 5% increase in salary. As a PSWI, the employee will be on probation for 6 months in this position. Once the employee has completed 6 months successfully, the employee is eligible for an additional 2.5% merit raise.
