Job Description

The Material Supervisor / Material Planning & Logistics Process Coach leads a large team of union hourly employees in a high-volume automotive manufacturing plant. This role oversees daily material handling and logistics operations, ensures adherence to established policies and procedures, and drives safe, efficient, and reliable production support. The supervisor maintains strong floor presence, makes quick decisions in a fast-paced environment, and holds team members accountable for performance and behavior.

Responsibilities

Supervise and lead a team of approximately 50–90 union employees in material handling and logistics within the plant.

Oversee daily material flow to and from production lines to ensure uninterrupted manufacturing operations.

Ensure all team members follow established plant policies, procedures, and safety standards.

Hold employees accountable for performance, attendance, and adherence to work rules in a union environment.

Provide clear direction, coaching, and feedback to team members to support continuous improvement and high performance.

Monitor and adjust staffing, assignments, and priorities to meet changing production requirements.

Make quick, informed decisions on the floor to resolve issues and keep operations running smoothly.

Collaborate with other departments, including production and maintenance, to coordinate material needs and resolve operational challenges.

Utilize basic computer skills, including Excel, to track performance, prepare reports, and manage operational data.

Support a culture of respect, professionalism, and accountability while working effectively within a unionized workforce.

Participate in rotating swing shift coverage and ensure presence on-site 30–45 minutes before production starts and after production ends.

Essential Skills

Previous supervision experience, preferably 3–5 years, in an automotive manufacturing or logistics facility.

Proven experience supervising employees in a union environment.

Background in the automotive industry, ideally with an OEM or Tier 1 supplier.

Bachelor’s degree (BS) preferred.

Basic computer literacy, including proficiency with Excel.

Strong ability to work in a very fast-paced environment and make quick decisions under pressure.

Resilience and emotional toughness, with the ability to maintain composure and professionalism in a demanding setting.

Ability to hold team members accountable while maintaining effective working relationships in a union setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is beneficial.

3–5 years of supervision experience specifically within an automotive facility.

Experience in material handling, logistics, or related plant operations.

Exposure to large-scale manufacturing environments with complex shift structures.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively coach and direct a large workforce.

Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and production demands.

Recommendations or strong references from automotive industry leadership are considered a significant asset.

Demonstrated ability to thrive in a high-pressure, high-volume environment.

Work Environment

The role is based in a high-volume automotive manufacturing plant with a very fast-paced, production-driven atmosphere. Work involves frequent presence on the plant floor, coordinating material handling and logistics activities in real time. The position follows a rotating swing shift schedule, cycling every three months between A, B, and C crews. A crew production runs Monday–Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; B crew runs Tuesday–Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.; C crew runs Friday and Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday and Monday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Supervisors are expected to arrive 30–45 minutes before production starts and remain after production ends, and some weeks may require 60–70 hours of work. The dress code is business casual, with attire such as slacks and golf shirts appropriate for the environment. The work requires flexibility, quick decision-making, and comfort operating in a demanding, unionized plant setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Louisville, KY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $38.00/hr.
