Animal Shelter Worker

An incumbent to a position in this class performs a wide variety of unskilled independent laboring work for the Buffalo Animal Shelter. Duties of this position may allow the incumbent to work independently. Work is performed under immediate supervision. An Animal Shelter Worker has no supervisory responsibilities.
Incumbents will be required to perform any tasks of an unskilled nature as deemed necessary by the Director of Animal Shelter or a designee; May assist in general handy work in the Animal Shelter including minor repairs to the building, kennels, walkways and fences; May assist in the care and handling of animals in the Animal Shelter; - assists in the cleaning and maintenance of the kennels.; -assists Animal Shelter personnel with general unskilled laboring duties; May assist in the gathering and disposal of dead animals found in city streets, SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), veterinarian hospitals, and various city laboratories; May assist with general labor and custodial work in and around the Animal Shelter; -assists in the removal of trash; -assists in removing snow from parking lot, pathways, and accessible outdoor areas; -assists in cutting grass, trimming shrubs, raking leaves, and maintaining grounds; -assists in cleaning and sanitizing all accessible areas; May be required to work in the Animal Shelter supply room; -may distribute supplies; -may, under direction, requisition supplies by using an electronic system; -maintains stockroom area to ensure cleanliness and safety; May receive, accept and sign for deliveries to the Animal Shelter; -checks incoming orders against items listed on requisitions/invoices; May assist in loading and unloading delivery vehicles; May be required to operate a light pick-up truck, automobile or other light motorized equipment; May be required to maintain various records of work performed; May assist in the set up and tear down of Animal Shelter events; Performs related duties as required
High School Graduation, GED or Equivalency Diploma plus six months of full-time experience working in an animal care facility involving the upkeep and maintenance of kennels or related animal housing areas. NOTE : Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a current NYS Drivers License which must be presented at time of appointment and maintained during employment. Applicants must consent to screening requirements of the LENS (New York State License Event Notification) program is in accordance with Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 382.703(a) as part of the application process for positions requiring a NYS Driver's License.
Working knowledge of or the ability to be trained in safe practices in the care and handling of animals; Working knowledge of the basic practices and techniques of one or more of the standard trades; Working knowledge of the common tools, terminology and safety precautions used in minor maintenance and repair work in buildings and grounds; Willingness to perform routine mechanical work; Willingness to work under all weather conditions; Ability to follow oral and written instructions; Mechanical aptitude; physical endurance; strength; agility; good hand and eye coordination; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
